The reason that Lily reacts so strongly when someone she loves is threatened is that she is terrified of losing them. She's a worrier, and when those she cares about are out of her sight and in possible danger, she's a complete mess. This is another reason she doesn't get along as well with Sirius as the others. He tends to lead them all into dangerous situations without thinking through the consequences (for example, when he unthinkingly lead Severus Snape to a transformed Remus, which could have been disastrous for both of them). Lily is extremely protective of those she cares about and takes slights against them very seriously. She's seen standing up for Severus Snape when James and Sirius are torturing him during school. It's not only her good friends she has such compassion for, though. She would have stood up like that for anyone who was being bullied as Severus was.
Of course, Lily does have a softer side as well. She's a sucker for poetry and romantic gestures. She loves James' smile and the sparkle in his eyes and the way he looks at her like she's an oasis in the middle of a vast, dry desert. As a muggleborn she loves the cinema, particularly old American movies like Casablanca and An Affair to Remember. Her skill in potions translates well to the kitchen and she's a great cook.
