The Grand Palace
Hey Everyone,
can someone explain to me how I upload pictures onto this site? I cannot figure it out
Anyways today after our first lecture I picked up my laundry. It looks good except the colors almost seem a bit faded...i may be seeing things. Then we all loaded a bus and headed down to bangkok. It was great. We went to the Old Royal City. While there we were able to see a ton of stuff. We saw the Royal Palace, a bunch of temples, and some museums. We also had our own tour guide since it was through the university, I think.
The Royal Palace is really cool because the roof is pretty much Thai architecture but the building itself is almost like the Palace of Versailles in France. What happened was is it was built during a period when Thailand wanted to be more accepted by the West so they tried to "civilize" by adopting western trends.
Then we saw some temples which are just amazing. They have like millions of gems and pieces of glass inlaid. Also gold is everywhere and it has been hammered like wall paper. Guess where it is from? The tour lady said it was from ITALY! haha
I also got to see the Emerald buddha which is supposed to be a really holy object to most buddhists.
Also all around the palace there are paintings telling the story of the Ramakien, or as it is better known in India, the Ramayana. Many of you may have read it before...or if you have not I actually have the book at home. Got it as a kid...so borrow it! haha
We also got to see many of the multiple throne rooms and coronation rooms. WE also saw where kings are laid out when they pass away. Then we went to the bus. We were accosted by several people selling things; they send kids to you with tears in their eyes and they try to sell you stuff. I just kept saying "Mai" or "no". Anyways.
Then went back to the apartments and then went to dinner. Went to good ole pizza hut. However, Pizza Hut here is like a really fancy restaurant.
Then I saw the worst movie I have ever seen. "Sin City" . I know some of you may like it, but I hated it. I am currently trying to wipe it from my memory. HAHA
O yea I forgot to tell you all a few things. THe highways here are so funny and inefficient. You always have to go north and loop around to get anywhere. I need to draw you a diagram to show you. You almost always have to pass where you want to go, or go out of your way for a couple of minutes.
Also, women here are obsessed with being thin (though I have yet to see an even slightly heavy thai girl) and they use whitening cream. It is wierd because we are all trying to get tan and here people try to look as white as possible!
