So the next day I awoke in my apartment (lol) and ate some of the pastries from the night before. They had also fully stocked the apartment so I was pretty much set.
I slept really long, I think I was tired from the bus ride. Around 11:30 Valeria came to get me. The day was extremely different weatherwise...instead of clear skys and strong sun it was grey grey gray. haha It would still turn out to be fun.
She took me to her fathers work. Her father works for or runs a company that makes houses in Sicily. It was cool to see all his workshops and stuff. They make pretty nice houses in a similar way to how the apartment I am staying is done. After that we went to his own personal wine making pit and cellar. We had to climb like 100 feet into the earth!!! It was really cool and then I was rewarded with a glass of the grillo wine that they make. However it isnt really for sale, mostly for friends and teh family and such.
Then I went with Valeria and her friends to the spot where are the kids hang out after school. Then we drove around for a bit and eventually went back to her house for pranzo (lunch). Of course it was a feast. After our pasta we had these huge shrimp things called Gambarones which are delicious. Then we had fruit. After all this I hung out for a bit.
THen Andrea was going back to Perugia in the north of Italy so I went with him and his mom to the airport. The Marsala airport is really really small and I think I was the only American there...haha
Then after Andrea took off, his mom and I drove around the coast again and talked about how they live in the summer in Marsala. Kind of similar to home, going to the ocean alot and hanging there.
Then I went with Valeria and her friend to some stores and back to the apartment.
Around 8 we went to a festa (party) for a friends birthday. I got to meet a ton of Sicilians and it was really fun hanging with them all! The food was delicious as always (arangini etc, etc, nutella cakes haha) and I realized how similar life is in both countries. They love to play the guitar at parties and sing acoustic songs too...and they know 'hotel california' and oasis songs in english...but everything else is italian.
It was fun talking to everyone and answering questions about America. I also got to practice my Italian, learn some sicilian, and they were able to speak a bit of English to me.
After the festa I went to say bye to Valerias dad and then I packed showered and went to bed.
The next morning I bought my ticket for Palermo with Valeria and her mum...Valeria would be leaving for Prague in a few hours with her school but they waited with me until my bus left. I was so excited to go to Palermo but I was glad to have gone to Marsala. It was a really great town and reminded me of going up north back home. I didnt find anyone with my last name but alotta kids had said there is a doctor with it in Marsala. So I guess next time I come I will stay for longer and try to find more relatives. But I have met a few for now.
Marsala was great! I will try to begin writing about Palermo when I have some time.
