A morning of suck, and afternoon of pure ROCK

Apr 24, 2010 15:54

I was up at 5.30 this morning. After shower, breakfast and taking an unhappy three year old in to his Mum I was off to work.

Work was HELL. I actually quite like most of my job...the "give me my samples and then leave me the fuck alone to get them tested" part that is. Weekend shifts are not part of that. Weekend shifts are in early and keep the main lab running (much as the evening shifts I bitched on the other day are).

Today was different.

Our lab runs on two main computer systems: One that links the various machines to a central database, and one that links all the clinics and wards to said database.
Today, the latter was shut down so they could do some sort of massive data dump/back up or something - the process is taking around 60 hours apparently so it must be a hell of a lot of data. Considering how many samples we run each day this is no surprise. This meant the back up system kicked in: the wards all sent us the sample orders on individual forms which had to be manually entered into the system. Cue everybody working ten times as hard and generally getting pretty fecking stressed making sure nothing got missed and everything was right, all the while telling the nurses and such like who couldn't grasp these basic concepts (and, at one stage, some fool who wanted us to accept a package marked "Dangerous materials" on the basis that the actual recipient wasn't in their office...which happens to be close to, but strictly speaking nothing whatsoever to do with, our department.).

Awful

Buuuuuttttttt...

Then I went to a park where I met up with Helena, our friends Micke and Ulrika...and most importantly my little lad, their little lass (almost exactly a year younger than Will) and thier tiny little 7 week old bundle. Much fun was had. There is immense satisfaction in wtaching your child happily trundle around and play completely carefree.

Home again now, to find that Watford stuffed Reading 3-0 and are therefore safe in the second tier of English football for another year, depite all the turmoil in the club this season. Amazing.

Just a shame that come 5.30 tommorrow morning I'm up and off to work again...

In completely unrelated news...an observation: I love the Sisters of Mercy...but their basslines are fucking boring to play along to.
