Victory:
Gamling: Too few have come. We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor.
Theoden: No we cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.
A handful of people, standing together, back to back, praying. A veritable army surrounding them. Shouting abuse, chanting obscenities. Marching around the group at prayer, shouting to drown them out, moving closer and closer. The closer they come, the louder they shout. The smaller group stands firm, linking arms. Standing firm against the shouts and chants and attacks from the crowd. Slowly but surely, the shouting crowd begins to thin. A few brave souls push through the lines and join the beleaguered group in prayer. Soon the chanting army has dwindled to barely double the group calmly praying. With a final set of chants, they march past. And disband. The praying group still stands, unmoved on their island. They had weathered the storm. And won.
This post celebrates the counter-protest on campus. I am honored to have been a part of it, supporting the decision of the administration. The president has done an amazing job in returning this college to it's roots in the Faith and he deserved no less. While only a few stood against the protest, their courage was the greater. To all those who stood those hours in the frigid winter's night alongside me, I thank you. And I am truly honored to know each one of you. God bless.
In conclusion, my sentiments are best summed up in William Shakespeare's Henry V:
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
