So, I spent most of last week in NM at the NRA Whittington Center where the Wyoming Schuetzen Union's national competition took place.
Well, I didn't win. But I had a lot of fun! There's nothing quite like that area - big, wide-open, gorgeous scenery all around. Oh yeah, and lots of shooting!
I mostly shot in the .22LR competitions, not yet having black powder reloading down. I'm hoping to resolve that this year, by first getting my Sharps re-barreled and then buying equipment to start casting my own bullets.
Last year, in the open class, I shot a 245/250 using my brother's rifle and his MVA scope. This year, he used a new Unertl scope, and shot a 249 himself, which is quite awesome. I ended up with a new rebuilt Winchester 1885 Low Wall in .22LR, and iron sights (Baldwin), and shot a 239 with them.
Not as good as last year, but I'm happy with it. The best part is I have a line on a Unertl scope of my own now...
The new rifle has a ratchet-rifled Shilen barrel, and shot really well. I also shot in the .22 silhouette competition, shooting 2 chickens off-hand at 50 yards, 9 pigs prone off sticks at 100 yards, 6 turkeys at 150 yards, and 9 rams at 200 yards. I would have had the 10th ram, but I got off rhythm, took too long, and just shot over him. That 10 pin will have to wait for next year.
The total of 26 went in as "unclassified Master", which is what happens when you've never shot before. The good/bad news is that it makes me AAA ranked. The ranks go from B, A, AA, AAA, to Master, so a pretty good start. 26-30 is considered AAA, so if I'd have sandbagged it, I'd have made top AA instead ;)
Still, a great week. The only down-side is that my rifle was misfiring about 1 out of every 10 shots, and I sent it back with the gunsmith I bought it from to get it fixed. Anyone have a business address I can use to get it shipped back to me? No FFL required, as he's considered the manufacturer in this case.
