I didn't watch the first MFU episode when it was shown, still, happy U.N.C.L.E. anniversary, God bless and all that. Though I am not entirely sure, I have a memory of watching "Green Opal." A buzz at school surrounded the Illya character, but maybe I blinked in that particular episode and missed him. I didn't know who my classmates meant. I kept ( Read more... )

I don't remember seeing the first episode either, though I remember seeing Quadripartite and being hooked on Illya instantly and then being frustrated when he didn't show up in every episode. Watching Vulcan now you can see the mechanics being put into place and a Solo more tightly wound than he later became once he started interacting with Illya. And it has that great image of Solo behind the spiderweb of cracks in the glass which always says Uncle to me.

On my usual, more superficial level, I'm glad you mention the pointy toed suede shoes--in "Solo", the color version, we can see them in their full taupe suede glory. God I love those shoes. Ahem.

Illya had some great shoes, though those pointy ones are certainly a highlight. He's certainly not dressed like Illya in this ep. In the movie his ensemble when he goes to Napoleon's apt, the one with the vest, is Savile Row lovely. And some of his shoes in later shows appear to be handmade and his boots in "Nowhere" are ab fab. I hate his loafers though. Is this shallow?

I, ummm, notice clothes a lot. He wears the same houndstooth vest he's wearing in Solo in Gurnius. I can't tell if its the same suit though. I love all his pointy toed shoes in Season 1 and the Nowhere boots are gorgeous. He may be wearing them again at the end of J for Judas, it's hard to tell. Shallow indeed--I have kind of a running tally in my head of re-used clothing items in the show; the red silk bathrobe wins hands down, seen in all four seasons. Don't like the loafers much either.

I know! I used to play Hide and Seek with Illya - where was he? Is he in this episode? Will he be in the opening only? What is his rank in the Soviet Navy? Will he recover from that bump on the head we saw in the opening teaser? etc.etc.etc.

My recollection is that there were a great many loose threads about Illya in that first season - he'd get shot and drop out of the episode, or say something provocative and then disappear. (Of these threads is much great fanfic woven.) I recall that when I saw "Bow-Wow" I nearly passed out - not only was he front and center, but he got the girl!

While I don't think it was intentional, the now you see him, now you don't "marketing" of Illya was quite effective. We (and I mean both boys and girls) used to talk about him at school, including wondering if *gasp* he could be a communist. I couldn't bear when he wasn't in eps or got written out after a promising start and was soooo excited about "Bow Wow." In Alice I saw (finally)! a girl in her right mind. And I always liked Illya to have romantic interests.
