Thursday afternoon I had an interview with Woodward Governor in Ft. Collins CO (About an hour drive) I arrived just a few minutes early and sat down in the lobby to wait. The receptionist tried paging Roger Hybeck several times. About ten minutes after the scheduled interview time a man came out into the lobby, looked around and left. Another ten minutes passed and the same man came into the lobby again. This time he asked if I was CJ. It turns out this is Roger. From the moment I said, “Yes, I’m CJ.” I had the impression he was hoping I’d just go away. He only talked about things we discussed in the telephone interview. He didn’t get into the nature of the project in more than just general terms. He seemed to be doing the minimum necessary to get me out of there. I’m not sure if it was a simple case of gender discrimination or if he read me as a transsexual. I did clearly get the impression that if I were a man, the interview would have gone differently.
I’m not too broken up about it though. Sunday I was talking with my nephew about it and he asked what company. I told him, and he said he worked there and that it was the worst company he had ever worked for. He made it clear, it wasn’t the job, and it wasn’t the people, it was the company, and the corporate couture that he couldn’t stand. Interestingly, I knew I wasn’t going to get an offer, so when Roger asked if I had any questions, I asked, “What is there about this job that will excite me? Get me up in the mornings and keep me up at nights? What makes this position special?” He couldn’t answer me, so I asked, “Why is the company special to you?” and again he didn’t have an answer. I know I could have answered those questions, but that an employee of twenty years couldn’t tells me that there are problems there.
I feel like I should have stopped him ten minutes into the interview and asked what the problem was. Confronted him with my observations right up front rather than playing the game. If I had dropped into my role of counselor I might know for sure what was going on, but I still wouldn’t be any closer to having a job.
As to the Gore interview, they offered me the position, but I had to be honest with them and let them know that my hands shake too much to do the work they were offering. *sad*
