Competence, Incompetence

Yesterday, I decided to change my furnace filter, since I was already in the basement to do laundry. At some point in my furnace's history, the bracket for the filter got bent, resulting in a struggle to remove the filter every time. Most of the time, the cardboard on the end of the filter rips. When the filter got stuck this time, I though nothing of it and gave a harder yank. This time, the entire cardboard end cap separated, and stayed in. Great. I succeeded only in knocking it down toward the inside. I had to get something long enough to reach in and drag it to the front. Then I couldn't get my needle-nosed pliers in far enough to grab it. The end cap now sits at the bottom of the ductwork, waiting for someone with a clue to get it out.

Several hours later, I tried changing the flush valve in my toilet. This proved relatively simple. The hardest part was probably the several minutes of deliberation on valve brand at the hardware store. The second hardest part was figuring out the proper chain length, but I got it in three tries.

And then I went to bed with a load of wet clothes in the washer from the afternoon.
