The Final Straw Theater presents Sprint

I've been contemplating the move from Sprint PCS to Verizon Wireless since June. Things came to a head a week ago when I went into BJ's and saw the LG VX9800. I've been furiously researching it for a week now, alternating on an hourly basis if I was or wasn't going to get it. I downloaded the manual and discovered some really awful interface quirks. Last night I stayed up until almost 3:00 downloading the 9800's browser's SDK to try the simulator. The simulator could only demo a much smaller display, so that wasn't quite enough to sway me. Still, I decided to wait until my current phone died.

And then this afternoon, I met someone who has the 9800 already and loves it. With one minute of poking, I was able to determine that the manual was less than worthless. The manual suggested a five-button path from the home screen to the calendar. I found a way to do it in one!

So the next step in the process of switching: go to a Sprint store to ask them to download and print my phone's address book. I tried calling the Irondequoit store, but I could only leave a message to make an appointment. They promised to call back within twenty-four hours, which they failed to do. The web site indicated that the Henrietta store is the big one for repairs, so I trudged down there today. The rep was skeptical that they would have the cable for a five-year-old phone, and it would be $15 to try. I pressed her further, and she went in the back to see if they had the cable before I plunked down $15 to see if their software was compatible. Nope, no cable, even though it's not merely a PCS phone, it's a Sprint brand phone!

Good riddance, Sprint!
