Weekend Highlights: Four Songs, New Tags

Barbershop contests place a high priority on sound quality for the audience. Every judging panel is required to have at least one judge certified to approve of the sound system as it's operating at the start of the competition session. Typically, a volunteer "Mike Tester" group sings two songs while judges wander the auditorium checking for bad amplification. As a favor to the guy who organizes the contests, my quartet, with ddmerillat taking the place of our on-the-post-surgical-mend bass, tested the microphones. As luck would have it, the sound system was feeding back with very little provocation, and we got to sing four songs. Never in my ten years of attending district contests have I heard a mike tester do more than two songs. Whee! ddmerillat acquitted himself admirably.

Saturday night, we were trolling the halls of the hotel looking for fun folks with whom to sing. Thanks to a modicum of planning, ddmerillat recorded the teaching sessions of some new tags. I've already transcribed "Windmills of your mind" and "As like the breeze". Both are on the tender side. "As like the breeze" is an easy teach, so I'm looking forward to trying that one at chorus on Tuesday.

The true measure of my enjoyment of Saturday night: I didn't go back to my hotel room until 7:00 Sunday morning. Yeah, I'm going to sleep well tonight.
