ddmerillat has this awful habit of introducing me to computer games. Let's see . . . Starcraft, Worms Armageddon, Quake III, Myst Uru . . . have I missed any? I figure it's about time I return the favor. I mentioned to Dave, who's been playing a lot of
America's Army lately, that there was once this great first-person shooter with a plot. It had puzzles, plot, shooting, a gigantic map, and set the standard for flexibility of movement. That game was System Shock, by Looking Glass. I played it through back in '96/'97.
I still have the CD, although I expected it to be difficult to get a DOS game running correctly. As luck would have it, somebody has patched the executable so it works under Windows XP. I can get sounds, but not music to work. The music, memory serving, kicked ass, so that's a bit of a loss. More amazingly, years of work have gone into an
open source port of the game that would use accelerated 3D graphics instead of the game's original engine. Whee!
So as soon as Dave is foolish enough to let his guard down, I'll Shock him. Maybe I'll be nice and wait until he's graduated. :-)
