Title: Santa Counter-Measures
Rating: G
Summary: The twins hear about Santa Claus and get the wrong idea.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the base, not a creature was stirring…

…Except the two on the roof.

“Sparkling One, Sparkling Two, status?”

“How come you get to be One?” Nighthawk grumbled back.

“Because Comm gets to pick the designations, and Recon has to deal with it,” she told him primly. “Status?”

Nighthawk grumbled to himself, but looked around, scanning the area just as he’d been taught. “No sign of anything yet,” he radioed back, settling back into his hiding spot.

“Nothing on my scanners either,” Sunsinger whispered from her own hiding place. “And it’s almost midnight!”

“He’ll be here,” he said, confident.

“And then we’ll grab it and teach it to try and sneak into our base!” Sunsinger gave a decisive nod, despite the fact that her brother couldn’t see it. They’d been shocked when Sam had told them about the creature who snuck into houses one night a year. They’d demanded to know why no one had caught it yet, but Sam had been to busy laughing to explain.

They still weren’t sure what exactly was so funny, but they’d decided that it had to be a Decepticon. Why else would it only infiltrate good children’s houses?

None of the other adults were taking it seriously, either, so they’d snuck out of their room after everyone had settled down for the night, and climbed up to the roof. Now Sunsinger was tucked into a niche between sensor equipment, while Nighthawk staked out the heating vent, the only opening on the roof they could find that they thought would be big enough for the creature to get in.

“Do you see anything yet?”

“No,” Nighthawk whispered back, turning to look up at the sky, peering through the fluffy white snow drifting down. “Not a thing.”

“It’s midnight! Where is he?” Sunsinger frowned in her brother’s direction. “Did you miss him?”

“How could I have missed him? He would’ve had to come right by me!” Nighthawk protested, indignant.

“Wait, shhh… I hear something.” They both froze, audio receptors straining. “It’s coming from inside the base! It must have gotten in!”

Two sets of horrified optics met for a brief moment, then both sparklings were scrambling for the base entrance.

They ducked inside, skidding around a corner and almost running into Maggie.

“Hey!” Maggie yelped, flattening against the wall to keep from getting ran over. “What are you two doing up?” She asked, flicking a bit of spilt coffee off her hand. “It’s Christmas Eve, and you two are supposed to be asleep. Don’t you know that Santa won’t come if you’re awake?”

“He won’t?” The sparklings exchanged looks. “Ha!” Sunsinger crowed. “We did it! We scared him off!”

Beside her, Nighthawk gave a short nod. “He really is a Decepticon, if he only attacks sleeping people!”

Maggie watched them trot off, looking supremely satisfied with themselves, and shook her head. “Some days, it’s just best not to ask,” she murmured.
