NYC: Day 3

Aug 17, 2008 23:04

Wow! I think if I had to sum up today in three words, they would be:
New.
York.
City.

We've been pretty slow in the mornings, getting up and getting ready,
but you would never know that we were out on the streets by 8am with
all that we did today!

We started today with a lovely breakfast with Sara. She had cereal
with fresh fruit, nuts and some cheese waiting for us. Katie's place is
quite lovely, and it's a generous treat that Sara has us over for breakfast.
We had a nice morning with her, prior to heading out. Sara reminded
us about our rooftop lounge, so we actually wanted to check that out
prior to heading out to explore the city. What an awesome view. We
took a few photos and enjoyed the lounge and then decided to hit the
streets.

We head over to Times Square. This is what I think of when I hear NYC.
Big crowds, LCD displays, people on the street passing out fliers for
museums and tours. The weather was nearly perfect, so blue skies
above made for a lovely day walking through the crowds. I fell prey to
the marketing of m&m. I saw it way down the street, and by the time
we got close to the store, I knew I had to visit. We had lots of fun looking
at the different colors of yummy chocolate goodness. We picked up a
small bag of black cherry chocolate m&m's. If these make it to the
store, do yourself and pick a bag up!

We were working our way east to check out a street fair. Without
intending to, we walked through Rockefeller Park. It was a colorful
site with all the flags.

The street fair was really neat. Lexington was closed between 42nd
and 57th. There was all sorts of fun stands, and we had a great time
walking up and down Lexington people watching and checking out the
stands.

From the street fair we decided to walk over the Brooklyn bridge.
Aleks and I are pretty comfortable with public transportation, and this
visit has been no different. We've made good use of our subway passes,
so we hopped the 4 express down to the Brooklyn bridge. We were looking
for a place to grab a quick beer prior to crossing the bridge, and the lower
tip of Manhattan was quite different than what we'd experienced earlier.
It took a while, but finally the neon "BAR" sign called us in and we found
ourselves in this little whole in the wall bar called "The Patriot". They
had a decent selection, and while it was quite dark inside, we were
amused with the decor. There were bras hanging from deer antlers,
and just about any other item than made a nice hook. It was different
from any other place we'd been, and we enjoyed it for what it was before
heading on.

We made our way over to the Brooklyn bridge. It was about 4pm at this
point, and the sun was HOT! However, it was an awesome walk over the
bridge with a breeze and a gorgeous view of the city. It was quite the walk,
and we enjoyed every moment of it. Again, clear blue skies dotted with puffy,
white clouds made for lovely photos. I tried my luck at a couple pinhole shots.
I'll know more Monday night whether they turn out or not.

We met up with Renee and Adam one last time for dinner. We went to a
great Mexican restaurant called Tortilla Flats. The food was excellent,
and we very much enjoyed our company. Many margaritas later, it was
time to say goodbye. We walked back to the subway together. We had
time enough for a quick photo shoot before the E train came, leaving
Aleks and I alone on the platform.

We had a nice walk home from the subway, stopping by Columbus Circle
on the way.

In all, today was really quite something and Aleks and I both are just
so happy to be here!!
