I saw a fic like that, Elita and her femmes turn up after the TFTM events, and Rodimus has to go tell Elita what happened. It was sweet, in a sad way.
43. Ultra Magnus was the Consort for the previous Prime and when Optimus became Prime the Consort went to him. As a Consort is still Prime’s Consort whomever holds the title.

ETA: The muse has also been coming up with a senario for this - Prime Law (the law that pertains to Primes) dictates a Prime must always have a consort, so when Sentinel Prime's Consort died, a replacement was chosen, a young mech who was trained to be a consort until he was old enough for adult upgrades (I tentatively put this age at 15 vorns - with official adulthood at 20 vorns) - a young mech named Dion.
Vorns later, when Sentinel is killed and a new Prime is finally instated, another part of the Primes Laws pertaining to consorts comes into effect - if the consort of the previous Prime survives their lord's death, they must bond with the successor Prime... so Optimus ends up inheriting Ultra Magnus.
But in the intervening time between when he became Consort and when Sentinel died, Sentinel and Magnus had formed more a mentor/pupil relationship, with Sentinel training Magnus to be a peacekeeper, as Sentinel was. The media of Cybertron disapproved of this, saying that it was not a Consort's job to be a glorified policemech, but the fact that Magnus worked as such is what makes him become an important part of Optimus Prime's command, and one of Optimus's best fighters (it also is what has kept Magnus alive, because killing a bonded mech runs the risk of killing who they were bonded to as well, and if Magnus could be taken out, it could weaken Optimus).
Over all, the mental image of the relationship that forms between Optimus and Magnus is one of best friends, lovers and comrades-in-arms.
52.??: So you are telling me that Prime is bonded to ALL of the Autobots?! Is it the same for the Decepticons? That the leader must bond with everyone in the faction?
??: Yes, the Decepticons too are all bonded to Megatron. It is to ensure loyality.

It wouldn't be easy to be told the one you loved died. At least though Optimus had a noble death but hardly a comfort for the bereaved, even though Elita-1 knew of the possibilities.

Your muse is a busy thinker and also clever one. That's quite a sweet take on the bunny. My NOT muse (I don't have one. :( ) likes it too.
