Hey, guess what!  Cool people who are trying to help stop the genocide in Darfur called enough people in congress to keep the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act around.  I'm excited about this.  A plus for people who helped.

So, now there is a new problem, that you can be supercool about and help solve.  See, there are some random thousands of peacekeepers in Darfur right now... they're pretty cool.  They're all like yo, I keep the peace.  But congress is going to try to cut about 50 mil in funding, leaving these awesome peacekeepers resource-less, having to fend for themselves in a nation already wracked with warfare.  To do your part to help restore this vital funding, I think you should make a point of calling the Capitol switchboard operator at (202) 224-3121.  All you have to do is tell them which state you're from, and ask to be connected to one of your Senators or Congressmen/women.  Then just say that you're concerned.  You don't have to be extremely articulate or know all about what's going on to be concerned.  All they're going to do is record the fact that you called anyway.  If even ten people call, it may be enough to make a difference, so you'd better.

If you want any more info about this specific topic, check out darfurgenocide.org
If you do plan on calling, but don't know what to say, a call script compliments of darfurgenocide.org is in the cut.

There's a call script below, but it's better if you just use your own words. It doesn't matter to your representative how much you know, what matters is that you show that you care.

Call Script:

Hi, this is ___ calling from ___.

I'm calling to urge Congressman/woman/Senator ___ to do everything he/she can to make sure that $50 million for African Union peacekeeping troops in Darfur is included in the Defense Appropriations conference report. Experts from the State Department, NATO, and leading think-tanks have repeatedly said that funding the African Union is critical to stopping what both the President and Congress have declared to be genocide. Please tell the Congressman/woman/Senator that his/her constituents care about Darfur and expect Congress to fund the peacekeepers.

Thank you.
