Just...man, it's painful. Yet, I don't find it completely a downer or pessimistic (already mentioned why) and that's why I find it so touching. Ichise's easily one of my favorite Top 5 characters and the grace note they gave him after all the crap he's been through is so...humane.

I know some people get turned off by Ichise in the beginning because he doesn't talk much. Yet, his taciturn nature drew me in - as in, I want to know more about this guy - and when his limbs get lopped off, I felt so bad for the guy. From there on, I really rooted for him. (Gotta love the underdog).
Ichise's monologue to Ran when he's heading over the Opera House is beautiful. I really sensed his change and when "Ran" is walking aside him, it's an evocative reminder of how important she's become to him. It's very chilling foreshadowing when after he asks her, "Have you changed since I've met you?" and immediately, on her side, a Shape shows up. Gives me goosebumps, now that I look back on.
