Hi, I'm new here but I've been interested in ABe's work ever since "Haibane Renmei" and in 2004, I got into "Texhnolyze" by buying and viewing only the first DVD. Four years later on this day (that took a long time), I finally got myself the complete Collector's Box off of E-Bay and I'm eager to start watching it soon. However, because I heard so ( Read more... )

I loved him even more from Episode 12 on. I nearly cried in 13 when he reached out for Ran. (You can so sense the connection he wants to establish there). He just starts to open up, to care, and when the people he cares for die all around him - aka Onishii and Ran - I wanted to cry the tears that he didn't or couldn't. Doc's surprise shocker of "Oh, your mom's cells aren't in there" struck me so hard that it didn't surprise me when Ichise lost it. Though, I guess that's why his limbs still worked after everyone else's failed.

And the death of Touyama? Good merciful Christ, could anything else be worse than killing the guy who once befriended you? His expression and the body language of dropping the sword immediately after the killing blow said it all. And yes, I agree. When he promised to become Ran's guardian, that was seriously touching. Shame he was too late to fulfill that aspect, but at least he claimed her head from that freak Kano.

The ending still touches me. I was also thinking, even though he literally committed suicide by knocking Kano's head off and destroying Lux, what is left for him to live for? Everyone's either insane or dead; Lux is ruined and there are creepy Shapes rooted all over the place and the only person left alive as far as he knows is Kano. What life is that - a world with a madman and the dead, soulless eyes staring from the decapitated head of the girl he loved? Better death and release. At least he can take Ran's remains somewhere else, come to terms with his grief, send her off, and then accept his death - which is merciful compared to everyone else's - knowing that he's going to be a better place of tranquility and silence.

I'm not even picking it apart for its symbolism and meanings, actually. I saw it as a very human story and following the thread of Ichise's tumultuous life has been very rewarding, if saddening. *sighs* ;_;
