Graham and I went to the video store on Friday. Our main purpose was to buy Iron Man but we wandered around a bit for some videos to rent. While we were walking, we heard a cover of "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads that was pretty catchy. We found ourselves singing along to it as we walked through the video store.
When we got to the "Y"s Graham picked up a video he'd heard about at some point in the last year. It was a documentary about a senior citizens' choir that sang unconventional songs. The Clash. Sonic Youth. Bruce Springsteen. The Ramones. And then we looked up on the video screen of the video store and realized that was what was playing.
We put it in the pile.
We finally got around to watching it this evening, and it's It was ridiculously charming. There are 24 members of the choir, and they average to about 80 years old. Some of them have health problems. Most of them don't really know the music until they're presented with the lyrics by the director.
But they love it. And they're great to watch. And they have a sense of humor. The movie started with a new round of rehearsals about 10 weeks before their next show and progressed through to that first show with the new material. The director followed a good half-dozen or so of the chorus members through the rehearsal, and life, process, getting to know some of the singers a little bit better. At the end, they put on a show. There are music videos interspersed throughout the movie.
This is their "Road to Nowhere" video.

(Their
Sedated video is absolutely hysterical, but it's quality on YouTube isn't really good.)
I was grinning throughout the whole movie, except when I got choked up. There's a performance at the end of Coldplay's "Fix You" that brought me to tears.
I highly recommend watching this movie.
