Santa hats

I sat on Santa's lap at Lights in the Heights on Saturday night. A photo was taken, but not until after my friend Buttery righted herself from tripping while climbing into the sleigh. Still, in the picture, Santa looks a little befuddled to have both of us on his lap.

About a minute before the photo was taken, we were trying to distract a kid and a dog sitting on his lap into looking towards the camera. The kid wasn't sure if she wanted to be on "papa noel"'s lap. The dog seemed more ok with it.

I loved Lights in the Heights. There was awesome eggnog, some fantastic lights, and most importantly, a truly wonderful community. Being Houston, there were a few art cars, people wearing shorts, and a lot of dogs, kids, and various methods of transporting alcohol while wandering around on foot through the neighborhood.

I wore my Santa hat. I've had this hat since college, and I've worn it pretty consistently during the holiday season for the last 15 years or so. Back when I was in school, I'd wear it for the entire week of winter finals. It was sort of my rally cap. I'd tied a bell onto it, but fortunately for everyone involved, the bell doesn't ring much unless I'm moving a lot. The rim of the hat isn't quite white anymore. It's more of a dingy grey, and the ball at the end has started to clump up in some places.

I wore it to Buttery and Smash's house on Friday night. We were just going to hang out, eat pizza, and watch a movie. I'd changed into shorts (it's been in the 80s here for the last few days) and a comfy shirt, and then I realized that my shorts were red satin soccer shorts with white piping and my shirt was a white waffle shirt. So I threw on my red and white stripped knee high santa socks and my santa hat, and I went over with a bottle of wine and some DVDs.

When I walked in the door, they asked me if I was rampaging.

Yep, I replied, I'm rampaging your house.

My Santa hat got a lot of work already this year, but I don't think it's job is quite done.

I love this time of the year. The Lights in the Heights was about the community and festivity and giving part of the holidays without too much of the commercialization. There were people singing and dancing in their front yards. There were all sorts of ad hoc bands playing. While a lot of the Christmas lights were ornate, they didn't seem like they were professionally done. People had gone out with ladders and stings of lights and probably a couple six packs of beer to put up their decorations. There were house parties everywhere, and the streets were full of people.

We get a few more weeks of everyone being nice to one another, and I fully plan to relish in it.
