I volunteered for the GEMS* program this past week, teaching four groups of middle and high-schoolers how to make plaster bars and measure their strength. I was surprised to find that the middle schoolers seemed more enthusiastic and attentive than the high school crowd. Maybe I've been too much biased by outdated personal experience.
It was at various points exhilarating, thought-provoking, tedious, repetitive, and rewarding. Most especially at the student presentations the last day. When the kids talked about the experiment, I could tell that they understood it, and that's a really cool feeling.
Now to prep for the next week of sessions. Maybe we can find a lab with better air conditioning this time.
