[And have a charming, German accented voice]

Are you looking for something?

[Ooh, another German! Don't mind if he slips into his native tongue, then.]

Yes, I am.

[He follows accordinly.]

Would you like some help finding it?

teutonic_terror October 13 2010, 20:16:15 UTC
That depends. I am looking for something I believe to be buried in this general area.

Something buried here?

teutonic_terror October 13 2010, 20:21:08 UTC
Yes. The respawn system. It is most likely buried under a wide expanse of open ground, without buildings to provide pipes or basements or other things that could get in the way. If I can get into the respawn...

[Well. He's not going to entertain any delusions about 'fixing' Mayfield. But respawns of all sorts are his passion, and here is no different. And this is the mother of all respawns.]

Ah yes. I'm most interested in that.

[Because dead people should stay dead.]

The dead don't stay dead here, do they.

No, zhey do not. It is ingenious. New people arrive every day, new people leave every day... und yet zhe respawn can still keep up. Amazing.

Do you know much about this idea?

Herp derp forgot I culd drop the accent since they're speaking German already /FIXES teutonic_terror October 16 2010, 20:02:35 UTC
Oh, of course. We have one where I come from, but it is not nearly this large or complicated. And the respawn rate is much quicker, I assume because of the lighter load.

Really? So death doesn't last in your world either?

Reply

teutonic_terror October 16 2010, 20:39:22 UTC
On the bases, no. Death was a normal part of my day, working where I was.

[Does he sound... wistful? Just a bit. It's not really his own death he's referring to... you have no idea how fun it is to murder the same annoying little Scout twenty times in increasingly terrible ways.]

How does that work, if I might ask?

Reply

teutonic_terror October 16 2010, 20:46:14 UTC
It is... complicated. And the machine itself was nigh impossible to access. All I know is that, when I or a teammate would die, our bodies would disappear after a few moments and reappear after another few moments in the respawn room, good as new and ready to keep fighting. The machine itself was never visible, nor was any means of transporting our new bodies -- rather like the Mayfield system of merely waking up the next morning in one's bed.

[Listening intently.]

They do sound rather alike.

What were you fighting for?

[Oh dear. Hm.]

What any mercenary fights for? Money? Something to do? Free weapons, free room and board? The ability to kill as many people as he likes in as many inventive ways as he can think of?
