[There's a new face in the Mess Hall. This girl... didn't she come aboard recently? You might have seen her collecting her food in the last few days. Today it seems she's staying here to eat it. She's taken a seat in the corner, her back to the wall and all entrances and exits in view. She alternates between watching them warily and making herself concentrate on her food, which seemingly takes some effort.
At the moment she's eating alone. Join her?]

[In the angle between the roots of a large tree in the arboretum there nestles a new person, curled up with a book reader and a thermos flask. It seems she doesn't notice your presence for a moment - and when she does, she starts in alarm and her hand goes to a watchlike device on her wrist before she stops herself.]
Oh - hello. Sorry. Is this your spot? I didn't think anyone came here.
[She fidgets with the device.]
Er. I'm new. That's why you haven't seen me. I'm not an intruder or anything. I'm supposed to be here.

[You've both taken cover after the first exchange of fire. The enemy has you outnumbered, and they're closing in.]
I'll draw their fire. You'll have time to line up one shot. Make it count.
[Speaking from behind the eyeless visor of her Armour, Laura's expression is hard to read. You can see a set in her jaw where the lower half of her face is still visible, and the nervousness clamped down hard under decision is easy to hear in her voice. She passes a hand, ghostlike, through the substance of the wall sheltering you.]
They can't hit me. And their first attack won't hit you. I won't let it.
[She gives you just a moment to agree to the plan, then - before she can lose her nerve - steps right through the wall, insubstantial, and in to the enemies' line of sight, a mist of swirling colour gathering about her.]
