I really love finding good deals on things. $9 for a tub of Duplos for Rowan's birthday--would have been $25 new. $4 for a Christmas gift for a friend's daughter--would have been $15 new. Just thinking of the advice to give experiences rather than things.
I also like the idea of making a contribution to a charity. Something like giving geese or chickens, fruit trees or bed nets in their names. Both world vision and heifer international do this well.
The gang of upper elementary and middle school kids at our church are always looking for fund raising opportunities to raise money and donate the money they raise to a cause like this. They've done quite a bit over the last few years and their stated goal for this year is to be able to donate a water buffalo.
