-A Beautiful Birth-

Aug 03, 2009 18:04

Today was an amazing day. Because I got to witness a truly amazing human experience!

At exactly 1:25pm, my patient Felicitana gave birth to a precious baby girl.

I was technically suppossed to leave the Calca clinic at around 12:30 in the afternoon, and after an entire morning of waiting around in the hospital (we had a few too many doctors and too few patients today) the hours were pretty much crawling by. Felicitana had been in labor since 6:00 am, and everything was progressing really slowly, there was only so much that we could do, except wait it out. And of course, instead of leaving with my fellow volunteers I stuck it out because I couldn't imagine missing this incredible experience!

And so it went, I was helping  her out, walking around and trying to get things going. And then as soon as the doctor and I suggested getting her near the delivery room, every thing progressed super rapidly! It was a really quick birth, and before I knew it I was helping clean, weigh, measure and clothe a tiny baby girl. She was the most adorable little baby I have ever seen.

As the mom was getting all cleaned up, I dressed the baby in her first outfit and carried her, following her mom, into the recovery room. And then got to present the baby girl to her mom. Everything about the baby was so beautiful, and I seriously can't even stop talking about it today! I'm so happy! The baby's only mishap, is that she was born with a slight cleft lip. It didn't enter her palate or nose, which is really great, and she is completely healthy, and of course still amazingly cute.

I wanted to stay there and be with them forever, but alas I had to come home to Urubamba. I don't think I will ever forget this.
