Recap: Ever since I first bought my newest computer, complete with Ubuntu 64-bit OS, my biggest gripe/complaint/challenge/frustration has been the lack of ability to get WINE to play my PC-based games correctly. In many cases, not at all.
I've chatted about it here, on my blog, and on DIASPORA* (think "Facebook with better privacy").
Someone (I think from Diaspora) suggested that instead of using WINE, I should try PlayOnLinux for my PC game interface. So, I found it on the Ubuntu Software Center and downloaded it. Then I started looking. The first thing I noticed is that it natively included a HUGE bunch of batch-installs for PC-based games, several of which I have.
Then I looked closer. It not only had the install files for TES III & TES IV (and all official expansions), but it has TES V ready to go. Oops - not finished yet. What was that at the top of those files? Is that TES 1: Arena & TES 2: Daggerfall? YES!!! It sure is, and when I installed them, they didn't even HICCUP at making sure everything I needed was installed and setup. Without discs, and without fees of any sort. SCORE!
I've never played Arena or Daggerfall, so I've got some serious gaming to do next week!

First Impressions: I don't like Arena at all. It's a side-scroller type of game with very annoying controls, two things I don't get along with. Daggerfall is better, but the audio files don't play very well (lots of breaks, stuttering, and annoying noises that don't seem to fit the game, more like static). Weapon swinging is definitely unusual, but I think I can get used to it. However, I'm still stuck in the first room after opening the first secret door, just because I can't get the altar with the loot to activate so I can claim the goodies. Argh! I hate learning curves sometimes.
