In general, my answer is persitance. Getting involved in the politics of the game is as simple as being active on the lists, but not so active where you point continual 3 line responses consisting of jibberish, screw you hippy posts, or the famous one line "I with with X" posts. None of these will make you visible to the political game, or raise any regard for your PC.

Rather, post to actually say something. Some will disagree, some will agree, and in either case you will be making steps toward the making of allies and enemies in your group. Of course, doing the work to set up character ties and background relations before ever going live goes a long way toward this too.

As for plot and story...that's harder. I wish I had a great answer, but I don't, except to be persistent and not afraid to e-mail storytellers to the effect of chasing plot threads. There's not a whole lot else you can do, unless the plot is specifically hitting you on the head - and alot of us go to all of these Cons and still end up not involved in the plots except to watch them taking place. So...yeah. Be persistent. And hopefully you've created enough fun in your social and political game that you can entertain yourself even without "plot"
