Adding to the shock of Tim Russert's death, now we have
George Carlin. I first discovered the guy in the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure way back in the late '80s as the time-traveling sage "Rufus." I didn't realize at the time that that role couldn't be more different from Carlin's own anti-establishment persona, which blasted religion and Western civilization in a biting, sardonic fashion.
At 71 years old, he was not a young man. Add in years of drug abuse and previous heart problems and it shouldn't have come as a shock. But it always does when someone who is sort of an institution in and of themselves dies. Wild.
