I think you posted it on your journal a long time ago too. I like your take on Peter's view of their relationship in their school days. James had only one friend he treated as an equal. The ending, with the switch being genuinely Sirius' plan rather than Peter's (or Tom's) idea, manipulated to be presented by Sirius, is a bit different than how I usually think of it. It does work though, if Tom expected to be able to force the Secret out of Sirius anyway (and the latter holds even if it wasn't actually possible, as long as Tom believed it was so).
Hmm. If we take all of Rowling's post-hoc explanations into account: Tom couldn't have forced the Secret out of Sirius while he lived. But killing Sirius would have transformed all the Secret Knowers into Secret Keepers. Including Peter. So as long as Tom retained enough information to want to kill Sirius at a high priority (and that would depend on the wording of the Secret) the Potters wouldn't have been safer with Sirius as Secret Keeper than with Peter. I hope this comforts his tortured soul.
BTW I'm not sure if you read duj's take on Peter-James (and Remus-James)? It's called 'Wrong'.
