Event 39: $1500 NL shootout, and a tale of class

Jun 22, 2010 23:30

Hit my second cash of this WSOP, winning my first table in the $1500 NL shootout. Despite this thing getting 1400 or so runners, my table was not soft at all. There were some pretty questionable decisions but nothing too obscene. I ended up getting 3-handed with one-third of the chips against two online MTT pros which sounds about right for this tournament. I eliminated the first of them when I called a 25 BB shove with KJ against his QJ. That got me heads-up with the chip lead against the other guy. I kept making second or top pair against him for a relatively uneventful trip to Round 2.

My Day 2 was very short. I was down to 34k of my starting 45k when the following happened. 300-600/75, I raise to 1500 utg with QQ, called in the field, called by the BB. I've seen enough to know BB might be a bit on the reckless side. Flop T6x, check, I bet 3500, fold, BB calls. Turn 7, check, I bet 6500, he ships, I grumble and call, he has .... K8. "I need a nine," he says, and so, a nine he gets. As I am getting my stuff and leaving, he comments, "that is why I do not bluff without draw!"

This is also a guy who sprayed water all over the table after witnessing a hand in which another player check-raise bluffed a guy who snapped with quads. It is also a guy who bitterly grumbled "absolute fucking bullshit" (twice) after losing 4.5 BB in a pot with AJ vs 53. Finally, it is a guy who apparently received a one-orbit penalty for a verbal confrontation in what Hoss at an adjacent table later described to me as "almost a fistfight". So yes, in an hour and forty minutes, this guy sprayed water on the table, bitched and moaned over a 9 BB pot, needled a player after getting it in atrociously and busting him, and nearly starting a fight with a fourth player. Awesome. (He's also closing in on winning the second table, too. Yay. [Edit: Dustin Dirksen beat him heads-up! Yay Dustin!])

Next: $2500 mixed hold'em. Boring 10-handed crap, but I guess a tournament I'm kinda okay at.
