So on Friday, I picked M2 up from school early for a doctor's appointment (for he record, he is quite the healthy 6 year old!). As we're driving, he tells me about the weather chart they have at school. They put up whatever the weather is for that day, and keep track. One of the days, apparently, has a flag on it. I told him that must be Veteran's Day. The conversation ensued discussing soldiers and how we should thank them for their service. He said we should make some cookies for them. Well...sure! That's do-able! He then went on to decide maybe we should give the soldiers a pet, so I steered him back to the cookies. Those I can do. Pets, not so much! So I started researching how I could do it. Turns out, I can't ship cookies to just any soldier (or even AnySoldier hehe) because they are under orders to throw away home baked goods if they don't know the person they came from. BUT, I have a friend from work who does some work with the USO, so I asked her. And sure enough, military folks passing through the USO at the airport LOVE home baked goods! So, as I had promised M2, I set things in motion.
This morning, I got up and got everything set for a day of baking. The boys were eager to help for a little while.
Ok, they're licking the bowl and spoon in this one, but they did actually help with the rocky road squares. And even the pumpkin chocolate chip cookies (which came out better than ever this time, thankfully!)
It was a long morning with a lot of patience and a lot of standing for me. But I played with the camera to pass the time.
Rocky Road Squares hardening in the freezer
Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies cooling on the racks
Mmmmm, spooooon
Labeled and ready to go!
M2 and I took them up to the airport and carried them up to the USO. I wasn't sure if we would be able to get in or not, but it turns out we could! M2 was a hit. He was a little overwhelmed and later claimed to be "freaked out" but he did really well. One of the volunteers took him over to meet a gentleman on his way to Afghanistan. I was filling out our address form, so I didn't get to watch the exchange, but apparently Myatt handed him his card, and the guy said he'd put it on his wall in Afghanistan. So sweet! The volunteers there were all fantastic and very kind, of course.
Anyways, I'm so very proud of my boy. He is incredibly kind and sweet! He has this
bucket filling thing down pat. And just to sweeten it all up, on the way home from the airport he says "I touched a soldier!" (he shook his hand Hehehe)
