semi-good

- I find that for sinuses ravaged by dry air both indoors and out, breathing through a damp paper towel placed over the face works a treat. Add a few drops of lavender oil, if you've got some. Ghetto humidifier!

- Reading warnings about mercury levels in sushi tuna has done nothing but send my cravings into overdrive. Sushi soon, anyone? You don't have to eat maguro, if you don't want, but dammit, I'm gonna have some.

- Recent book acquisitions making me happy - setting Kushiel's Dart aside again to jump straight to candy-reading Killing Time by Della von Hise (legendary Star Trek slash fic that somehow got officially published). Also started, last night, In A Metal Web II, one of the few Michael Manning books that I don't yet have. I am annoyed that I couldn't buy In A Metal Web I on Amazon; they don't offer it new or used. It's great to have all this wonderful elegant porn to read; between Manning and Kushiel's Dart, it's a wonder that I can even walk straight (peanut gallery response: "You never could walk straight, darling.")

- Still very much in love with Heroes. I watched a couple of episodes last night and I am still noticing things that I didn't see before - for example, the woman who rents Hiro and Ando the Nissan Versa upon their arrival in Las Vegas is played by Riki Lindhome, who was awesome as the cheerily lovestruck bulimic model in the second episode of Pushing Daisies... I also caught, for the first time, the full impact of some of Nathan Petrelli's funniest dialogue. The love threatens to overwhelm me. Got it bad for Milo, but I love Adrian Pasdar just way too much.

- My new favorite food of the moment: Steamed brussels sprouts with Patak's Hot Lime Relish. Really, anything with Hot Lime Relish on it. I bought TWO jars last night at the store; this weekend, I hope to take a trip to Fubonn, the massive Asian mega-mall on 82nd, and see if they have better prices for it (or if they have even more brands, because Patak's is good, but I've had better - but I didn't know where it came from). It's shameful that I'm ripping through a jar of Hot Lime Relish every single week, but I'm completely habituated to how hot it is, and it doesn't upset my stomach in the slightest. I make meals based on whether or not I can put Hot Lime Relish in it or on it. What have I become? (And obviously, I need to learn how to make it myself, just to save a little money. It's not cheap.)

star trek, status report, tidbits, geekery, food, books, hey it's that guy!, heroes
