It's another sunny, gorgeous day outside. I'll go out into it soon enough (for a tiny little while, anyway) but over coffee I will happily watch THE ODYSSEY, that Halmi/Hallmark/Jim Henson Creature Shop CGI-tastic miniseries from '97, starring Armand Assante in probably my favorite role of his career.
I looooove Armand Assante - he's one of those earmarks of "quality" like Julian Sands or Rutger Hauer... handsome/sexy, a touch of Euro-sleaze, fantastic diction, looks great in Armani, that sort of thing. We need actors like that. (And considering that, I think it'd be great if they'd cast Assante as the Petrelli patriarch on Heroes; he's Italian and everything!) But yeah, even when measured against other Assante favorites like THE MAMBO KINGS (where he held his Sexy!Own against Antonio Banderas at his sexiest point), THE ODYSSEY wins. It gives him enough scenery to chew on, and enough mythic melodrama that his intensity doesn't seem out of place.
But the O also has Bernadette Peters as a bitchy, gothy Circe, Isabella Rosselini as the goddess Athena (well, duh, if you're going to get somebody to play a goddess...), Christopher Lee, Miss Vanessa Williams, Jeroen Krabbé, Michael J. Pollard, Greta Sacchi's excellent Penelope, and... er... Eric Roberts, just to bring it back to Heroes as I will always do.
...oh krap, they are showing ALL of the Halmi/Hallmark/Henson miniseries on SCIFI today. DUDE! I could easily just stay in all day... I was hoping to watch some Heroes or Red Dwarf or even 28 DAYS LATER... hmmmm... I think I'll be a good kid and just watch THE ODYSSEY and then actually go outside for a little while. As much as I love it, I don't need to see MERLIN again, and ... oh... HERCULES... no, I don't need to see that again, either. Even if it does have Sean Astin.
hey it's that guy!,
yay,
