I had one wish for accommodation for my birthday... definitely one of my favourite hotels in this world... possibly my most favourite of all...
The Moana Surfrider.
The Moana Surfrider, recently rebranded from Sheraton to Westin, is on what I consider to be the very central part of Waikiki Beach. It is also the oldest hotel on Waikiki Beach, having opened in 1901.
The central part of the historic building has been there since 1901, with two wings added to it in 1914. It is the eastern wing which of this historic building which has been my favourite to stay in, and I've stayed in many rooms here, ranging from city view corner rooms to banyan ocean view rooms over the years.
The last time I stayed there with my friend Amy, I was in room 521, which faced in towards the banyan courtyard, and since it has old-fashioned windows which actually open, we actually slept with open windows and no aircon, with the sounds of Hawaiian music and the ocean and ocean breezes wafting up through the open window. It was lovely.
So it was that Pete decided we should spring for an oceanview suite in this lovely, old building for my 40th birthday. Sure, there are bigger suites in the Ocean Tower, but that building isn't beautifully historic like the Banyan Wing.
There are only 5 suites in the Banyan Wing, and only 2 of those have Ocean Views, so it was great that Pete could work his magic to persuade them to give us the best one... suite 524, which was just across the hall from where I'd stayed with Amy 3 years ago... except totally renovated since then!
I'll post some photos in a subsequent post!
