Q.
What is one of the nicest things you've ever done for another person?
A.
It's tough to answer a question about being nice and kind when you're generally a selfish bitch like I am...
But back in about 2003, Peter and I invited his God-Daughter to come and live with us for a year while she finished up High School.
She had a rough life. Her dad was a bit of a con man, and once things broke up with them, her mother turned to her faith as a Jehovah's Witness... so she ended up with parents way too far at the end of the spectrum.
Unfortunately, she didn't adjust well to life in the big city and got involved in some very heavy stuff that we couldn't really help her sort out.
It got to the point where we, as well as a few other people who had been trying to help her, had to pretty much do what you do with an alcoholic, and not be there to pick her up anymore when she fell.
Luckily, she has landed on her feet, is doing well, is working a steady job, and last we heard is engaged.
It was a hard thing to invite a stranger, especially a teenage one, into our home, and then watch things turn from bad to worse, and realise we couldn't do anything about it.
But it seems in the end, we did the right things by her and it turned out OK. And I'm glad we asked her to come live with us, because it got her out of some small, country town and into a city where she at least had choices... which she seems to have finally used to her advantage.
