BJ: Oh I’ll go first then shall I?
AC+CM: Yes!
BJ: Hello…I’m Bradley James, this is my voice that you can hear
AC: er that’s enough of that
CM: Hi I’m Colin Morgan
KM: I’m Katie McGrath
AC: and I’m Angel Coulby
[scene in Ealdor]
CM: and this…is Ealdor that was my home village
BJ: and that was crap
{girls giggle}
AC: shut up
{Katie giggles}
BJ: Nah its alright even worse
AC: shut-up!
[scene: raiders approach the village]
CM: uh oh
AC: its so much more pleasurable when Bradley wasn’t...here/
KM: I would like to point out that for most of us here this is the first time we’ve actually seen this episode {giggles} so we’re commenting it as we/
CM: yeh first time, Bradley’s the only one who’s seen this
AC: ok I just wanna watch it
KM: {laughs} exactly!
CM: {chuckles} yeh this’ll probably be the most boring commentary ever.
{laughter}
KM: I think we should play y’know spot the stuntmen, that are reused ’cause only about four stuntmen in this
BJ: there’s three of them
CM: Caroline…my mother…in-in Merlin {snorts}
AC+KM: not your real mum, no.
CM: hmmm {chuckles}
AC: can she act, your mum? {giggles}
CM: what?
AC: can your mum act?
CM: yeh she’s alright
AC: is she alright? so she could have played your mum?
{Colin snorts}
[scene during the attack Kanen threatens the farmer]
KM: ah (my?) he’s so cool
CM: you had a bit of thing for him didn’t you?
AC: he’s evil Katie not cool
KM: well he was just he’s just he’s just look at him!
[Kanen throws Hunith to the ground]
KM: ok so that’s not cool
BJ: what’s Jonathan’s surname?
KM: Jonathan?
AC: I can’t remember
BJ: the guy who’s playing Matthew
KM: oh does it begin with ‘D’?
BJ: no it begins with ‘A’
AC: Oh I don’t know
[Kanen “don’t you dare disappoint me…”]
KM: {whispering} Oh he’s dark look at that
BJ: that guy - Jonathan
CM: hm hm
AC: don’t know his surname
KM: can’t remember
BJ: Sorry Jonathan/
AC: I never remember people’s surnames
AC: check out the horse
KM: That horse, all that horse ever did was that. Its like the camera went on it and it just rears up
KM: Good Joe, Joe!
CM: Joe Dempsey
[scene distance shot of Camelot, {sfx tower bell}]
KM: have you noticed right in Camelot the wind is always blowing the same direction cause the flags are always going in the same direction AC: really? I haven’t noticed that
KM: you should check that out.
{Bradley snorts}
AC: maybe only a geek would notice that Katie
KM: ok that was my mother and you’re insulting my mother/
AC: well…/
KM: that’s terrible
{girls giggle}
BJ: {quietly} a…family…of…geeks…obviously
{Angel giggles}
[Opening Titles]
BJ: this is my favourite bit of the episode
{Colin guffaws}
AC: what - the sword in the lake?
BJ: No, the er/
KM: the bit with my name on it
BJ: titles
AC: there’s me on the horse
{Colin and Katie laugh}
BJ: I get quite emotional with this music
AC: You sound emotional {giggles}
BJ: yeh well I’m an emotional kindof guy
{girls giggle}
BJ: as you can tell
AC: yeh
CM: he actually has brought some tissues in here for erm some of the later…sadder scenes
[Hunith “…our children won’t live to see another summer”]
KM: God we look upset
[Hunith “please we need your help”]
CM: that hall is just amazing isn’t it?
[Uther “Ealdor is in Celdreth’s Kingdom”]
BJ+AC: Yes!
AC: Yes it is Colin
KM: do you bring it all back to the show
CM: bring it all back to the show
KM: You’ve been media trained
CM: hmmm
AC: Eve Miles has to walk the length of it in episode one and she kept tripping over
CM: did she keep falling?
KM: Oh continuously-she didn’t do one take where she didn’t fall
[Arthur “surely we can spare a few men?”]
BJ: Surely?
[03:47: Uther “Ealdor lies beyond the ridge of Esktere”]
BJ: oh…
{Angel laughs}
BJ: Ealdor lies beyond the M25
{giggles}
BJ: for an army to enter…Surrey…/
AC: would be an act of war/
BJ: would be an act of war against Surrey
{sounds of drinks can opening, liquid being poured}
CM: {whispers} sorry
BJ: a bottle of wine
BJ: Colin’s opened up
KM: with a plastic screwtop
KM: classy
CM: {swallows} classy
KM: stop stealing my words
CM: {whispers} oops
{Katie laughs}
[04:23 scene Morgana leads Hunith from the audience hall]
KM: look I’m so good, you know, so good helping
CM: oh that’s good
[04:31 scene Arthur and Merlin are stood on the battlements]
KM: so wait I barely even remember doing this part?
AC: cause you weren’t in it
BJ: cause you weren’t in this scene
{laughter}
KM: obviously, but you know what I mean I can remember doing all the bit in Wales with the sword fighting but all the stuff in France…
AC: I can’t remember it I don’t think I was in much of it {giggles} that’s why I can’t remember it.
KM: you’re sure I’m not missing? just cut me out?
AC: in spirit - you’re there in spirit
KM: I’m in every scene in spirit
{Colin huffs}
[Merlin “its’ been an honour serving you”]
AC: has it really been an honour? No/
CM: well y’know I just say the lines that are on the page really
{Angel giggles}
KM: but the chemistry between you that’s undeniable/
AC: mmm/
KM: that’s something that just can’t be written, I mean look at this
AC: yeh a lot of love there
KM: God so much love
CM: I just remember Bradley refused to acknowledge me in this scene so erm we did a quite a bit of work
BJ: What are you talking about I (acknowledged you?) five times already
{laughter}
BJ: what more do you want? Look!
[05:25 Merlin “thank you Sire”]
KM: uh that’s so beautiful look at this moment there’s such a moment between the two of you!
[Arthur “Merlin…”]
KM: {voice} ‘I love you’
CM: {chuckles} c’mon you’re just fueling stuff here for websites to be honest with you
KM: ok I’ll stop
AC: we don’t need to fuel it
KM: {giggles} exactly
[05:42 scene Gwen handing Merlin a sword]
KM: oh this was the scene/
CM: oh yes/
KM: we shot this again on the last day this was the last scene I shot with you (Col?)
BJ: it’s funny I don’t remember this scene/
CM: that’s right
KM: we had to reshoot it
CM: cause we shot this in two parts wasn’t it and then they changed it or something
KM: well they cut everything out/
AC: cause they wanted an extra bit/
KM: and then they realised they’d cut the whole scene and then it didn’t make sense so we had to come back on the last day, very last day of filming and re-shoot from when I come in, so from/
[Morgan enters Gwen’s room]
AC: which is from here, seamless/
KM: they’re ya go shot on the last day
[06:15 Morgana “and I know how to fight”]
KM: I do.
[06:21 Gwen “if it was the other way round you’d”]
BJ: Laugh?
KM: is this the second, is this the second time we filmed that?
[06:35 Gaius “you got the food I prepared for you?” Merlin “Yes” Gaius “be careful with the wine you know what you’re like, one wiff of a barmaids apron and you’re singing like a sailor”]
{Angel sniggers}
KM: and that’s true in real life
{laughter}
BJ: {mimics} ‘singing like a sailor’/
BJ: that is actually true/
CM: {indignant} I don’t drink/
BJ: the evidence was the er wrap party
KM: mmm
CM: I don’t drink at all, wha’yous er talking about?
{Angel giggles}
KM: very clean living/
BJ: erm…/
CM: don’t drink kids
BJ: erm we’re talking about the wrap party where you drank a considerable amount/
KM: but still held it together/
CM: of water/
KM: and was still a gentleman by the end of it/
CM: hmm
KM: it’s a lie really but y’know/
CM: {sniggers} always
[07:07 scene Merlin cantering away]
KM: that’s obviously Colin that’s totally Colin
KM+AC: that’s me.
BJ: I really like the wig you’re wearing in that scene Colin I don’t know why you decided to put it on
CM: that’s a genuine horse here
BJ: look at that! How is that! How is that, Angel?
[07:21 scene: Merlin and Hunith at the campfire]
KM: also this isn’t me either
BJ: there’s no bodies in those sleeping bags there’s no-one actually in there
CM: nah there is there is
BJ: oh yeh they’re in the ground
KM: but they’re not us
AC: {giggles} they’re in the ground
KM: I know where we are why aren’t we in this scene?
CM: I wonder if there’s a close-up scene of you ’cause erm a close-up shot because its when the girl playing you erm Katie really does look like you
KM: see that kinda freaks me out because that means it’s a replacement Morgana if they ever get sick of me there’s some girl in France who can just do my part because she looks like me
CM: {chuckles} It is a bit unnervin’ isn’t it
BJ: we can only hope
{girls giggle}
AC: that they get Kiera Knightley/
KM: oh God/
AC: to do it
[08:00: scene Merlin and Hunith at the camp fire]
CM: lets see what this erm magic sequence that the guys at The Mill get there hands on when they create/
CM: lit’le spark dragon or somethin’
KM: you make a dragon?
CM: yeh
AC: oh right cool oh yeh I remember that bit in the script…just playin’ around
KM: does it take long to do that?
[08:23 Merlin conjours a dragon from the stick embers “Draca”]
CM: oooh
AC+KM: ahhhhh, look at that
CM: little spark dragon
[08:32 Hunith smiles at Merlin]
BJ: ah she’s proud
KM: You’re not very good at hiding that you’ve got magic now are you?
CM: not really
[08:41 Merlin fidgets in his blanket trying to sleep]
AC: looks well uncomfortable, was that a particularly cold night?
CM: D’ya know what it was actually alright
CM: although it was/
AC: hadn’t it been raining or something?
CM: no it was you know the heat of the fire when we were sitting at the fire
AC: yeh
CM: in the previous scene - my lips got…burnt!
AC: really!?
CM: yeh
BJ: its why they’ve have to draw on Colin’s eyebrows in the next few scenes
CM: yeh
KM: Ah don’t worry I’m sure there’s loads of people out there who’ll want to kiss it all better for you
CM: {tutchuckle} thanks
KM: you’re welcome
[09:06 Merlin with sword in both hands searches around the camp]
CM: like my little slip up here? Weh! There we go! Ohhh {laughs}
BJ: smooth
AC: it’s a natural
KM: not so much a dab hand with the sword anyway
BJ: thing is I was standing right in front of you/
CM: I know
[09:23 Arthur “I’d ask you for money but I know you don’t have any” Merlin whirls around with his sword “Arthur!”]
KM: cause you won’t pay him
AC: ooof! you could’ve chopped his head off!
CM: that…was…the idea!
AC: sadly you missed
{Angel and Colin chuckle}
CM: have we just slagged each other off for this whole commentary so far?
{laughter}
CM: don’t think we’ve actually said anything
AC: that’s all we do at work every day
BJ: we’ve not seen each other for a while we’re making up for lost time to be honest with you
[09:44 Merlin and Arthur sat at the camp fire with Gwen and Morgana asleep in the background]
CM: there’s Angel…no that’s the Katie one yeh
KM: you see this was just so far beyond y’know my talents that they just thought, hey, we just can’t let her do it
AC: well I wonder what we were doing at the time
KM: working
AC: I’m quite glad that we didn’t have to lie on a cold floor though to be honest
KM: cause we filmed more than one episode at a time so there’s two units running in France so if these guys are filming this we’re off filming another episode so if we’re not in it its/my god it does look like me!
[10:16 Merlin and Arthur on horseback]
BJ: that was shot-that little insert was shot away from the rest of that they’re different mountains…somewhere
[10:23 scene: raiders attack the village]
KM: you can see the descent in this into all the mud cause when we started filming here it was lovely green fields but by the end of the two weeks it was actually up to our knees in mud
AC: yeh I don’t think the people who run the medieval village were very happy with us
KM: no
AC: we churned up their whole place
BJ: that guy who ran it did like he said hello to me on the first couple days and then for the rest of it I’d like go to say hi and he’d just completely blank me/
KM: the evil eye/
BJ: maybe that was just personal I don’t know/
CM: I think we trashed that place/
KM: we did trash it
BJ: we absolutely trashed that village/
AC: I don’t think they know what they were in for at all
BJ: No
CM: though we were really unlucky with the weather throughout this whole shoot weren’t we it was I mean some days/
KM: like Glastonbury/
CM: like this is quite a nice day now but then next thing it would just start bucketing rain/
BJ: CGI
CM: yeh
[11:16 Arthur throws his dagger just missing Kanen]
BJ: take your time
KM: nice shot!
KM: these stuntmen were so amazing
CM: yeh they were brilliant
KM: I had about I don’t know about anyone else I had about twenty minutes teaching being taught about how to sword fight that was about it/
CM: look at the size of this guy am fightin’ like
BJ: the guy I’m fighting is having to wear a mask because he’s already turned up three times and been killed a couple times/
KM: Yeh he turns up later on I think/
BJ: so therefore you don’t see his face - I’m about to kill him
KM: Joe doesn’t look plussed at all he’s like yeh whatever
[11:54 Merlin uses magic to heat the sword]
CM: burn!
{Katie chuckles and Bradley laughs}
AC: oooh killed!
{Colin laughs}
BJ: say what you see guys! say what you see!
BJ: {funny voice} sword, burn, person
CM: idiot
[Morgana slays a raider]
KM: see now look how good that is
[12:13 Arthur “that never happened”]
KM: ‘course it did.
BJ: because obviously not fans cause that would be…ludicrous
KM: …close to reality
BJ: I’m the one holding the gang here you keep running with it
BJ: lud…ludicrous…
