Rose blinked at the abruptness of it all. She didn’t respond to Trian’s rather clipped tones and orders. She was too surprised to be angry about being pushed around. Normally, such an order would have had her back up and a snarl on her face

Trian opened his eyes to look down at Rosalie, examining her with his eyes from top to bottom with no change of expression. After a long moment, he gave a slight nod although it was ambiguous; whether it was one of approval or one of just acceptance of her presence or simply something else could be debated.
Uncrossing his arms, Trian stopped leaning against the wall and began to walk at a brisk pace. Not answering her question yet, he breathed in the night air, still fresh after the rains. Luckily, tonight there was no sign of an evening shower, let alone a storm.
"I wish to see how well you can defend yourself," he said without looking at Rosalie as they walked through the streets, "and perhaps rectify your form if it is lacking. I hope," he added flatly, staring straight ahead as he turned down another path, "that you are not as useless when faced with danger as you seem to be."
Rose stiffened. Defend herself? ...Great. She followed after Trian like a seemingly dutiful puppy, brooding over his first words until his last ones were spoke

"I am not doing this for my own benefit, but yours," he said sharply, closing his eyes momentarily before opening them again, tilting his head to look up at the sky. "Starting next week, if you are kidnapped again -- or something of the like -- do not expect me to come to your rescue because I will not."
After some time walking through the outskirts of Lespire, they arrived at an open plain, far away from the lights of the city. Trian closed his eyes for a moment, once again expanding his consciousness so he could sense sentient presences in a moderately large radius around him. There was no sense in being careless; although this was one of the better places to conduct this far from curious eyes (the people living here were used to seeing lantern lights out at night), it was a double edged sword. He was keeping an 'eye' out for any potential threats or interruptions.
Namely, Cragan. Despite Isabelle and Damon's plans, he wasn't one to leave his guard down. Tonight would be the perfect time to ambush them if he was not paying

Trian had complete confidence in his abilities. There would be no fires in this area of the plain without his permission.
Without warning, he darted towards Rosalie, coming from the side. In one smooth movement, he placed his left hand on his staff and adjusted his right hand's grip, twisting his body to get more force into the blow and swinging the spike end of his staff up to hit Rosalie in the back of her knees.
(( er, when I say, 'to hit', it doesn't mean the hit landed. That's just where he's aiming ))
Rose hadn't been expecting anything of the like. Of course, she saw Trian moved, and knew she could have countered it, had she known how.
His foot made contact with the back of her knees. She instinctivly locked them, which only helped Trian's attack. Both feet shot out from under her and she hit the ground on the flat of her back.
She landed with a curse and an 'oof', knocking the breath out of her immediately. The dagger between her shoulder blades bit into her back, promising a bruise later.
Okay, she screwed up. She quickly rolled to the side to avoid any following attack and despite the fact that she was gasping to get her breath back, she rolled nimbly to her feet.
She squared her shoulders against Trian, a dagger appearing in her hand. She'd be ready this time.
(( er. Concrit 1: For fights, it's generally better to keep the number of subsequent actions that happen in a post to a minimum. Think of RPing a fight a bit like scripting a play. I need to work on that myself...
Concrit 2: For reference, in a grassy plain like this, it's actually kind of hard to get a handful of dirt. For one, the grasses are covering the soil, which means you have to rip it up to get to it. It's not something you can easily do on the fly. I suppose you had a different kind of plain in mind? ))
Trian immediately turned his body aside, but some of the soil still got in his eyes...and the rest got in his hair. Even as he shut his eyes, he could still 'sense' Rosalie and kicked out in her direction, raising his staff.
The three fires swerved around to change direction when Rosalie moved and followed her, shooting towards both of them.
((Yeah, totally different. I imagined a tall, grassy, plain. Except the grass was kinda dead and wispy. Leaving clumps of dirt around...at least thats like a lot of the fields around here...))
Rose twisted to the side, but not quick enough. Trian's shoe caught her shoulder. She bit her tongue against a yelp.
Now, lying on the ground, she could see that her dirt plan had worked somewhat. Except now, it seemed as if Trian's fireballs were rushing them both. And Trian couldn't see to direct them.
(( We have something similar around my school, but it's sand rather than dirt. But even with the drought, from what I've seen, our plains here are still pretty grassy and tough and even though the grasses might be almost dead, grasses around here tend to hang around pretty stubbornly ))
Trian speared down with his staff, purposefully missing her. His eyes were still tightly shut. The three flames sped towards Rosalie, but stopped an inch from her, hovering menacingly, before backing off when Trian drew back a few feet.
"One chance," he said, rubbing his eyes to get the filth out of it. "That's all I will give you." The dirt was being stubborn. He fought down annoyance when he thought about how hard it would be to remove from his hair.
Rose rolled to her feet, backing away slowly from Trian. He had mentioned something about how he would kill her if she cut his hair. She idly wondered if getting dirt in it would garner the same punishment.
"One chance for what?" Rose asked, slipping a dagger into her other hand. Her eyes flitted from the fire balls to Trian and back again. "I can't do much more than run, Trian. Sometimes it's better to do that then stand and fight. Especially in a fight as lop-sided as this."
Trian watched her impassively, turning slowly to track her movement with his eyes as she circled him. "You are wasting your energy circling me," he said, the fireballs flitting around him, seemingly at random. He was barely moving, but he held his staff in two hands. "Circling offers nothing in the way of advantage, and actually disadvantages you, because you are wasting energy. While it may be useful against a jumpy opponent such as yourself, you need to analyse just who you are dealing with."
Although he stopped speaking, his lips continued moving silently.
