“Ne Oh-chan, be sure to free some of your time on Friday,” Nino called out to an almost-leaving Ohno.

“Why? What’s with Friday?” Ohno glanced back, his hands on the door knob.

“Birthday,” Nino replied with a smug smile.

“Ah!” Ohno’s initial reaction was that of a mixed delight and surprise so it can’t be helped if Nino’s face grew expectant of something. But the leader’s next words made his expression change in a matter of seconds.

“Your mom’s? Okay.” He bid the younger man goodbye and opened the door.

“Eh? Wait-” Nino called out in his signature high-pitch voice, a little annoyed because of all people, why must it be their leader who had forgotten about his birthday, worse, the oldest guy thought it was his mom’s birthday.

“What?” Ohno asked dazedly, his eyebrows furrowed and eyes stared sleepily at Nino.

“It’s not kaasan’s, it’s-”

“Ah!” Ohno grinned at his own supposed inanity. “Your sis’? Okay.” The man said, still laughing, and left the room cutting the already pissed off Nino midsentence.

“It’s my birthday!” He shouted when the man was out of sight, chugging his beer in less than a minute.

“Nino, if I were to get a gift, what should it be?”

Excitement rushed all through his system when Sho asked that question out of the blue.

“Um, the latest game is the only best gift for me,” Nino immediately answered looking greedily at the line of shops which displayed only the best and the latest games. As expected of Sho to ask him about what he want for his birthday. The guy sure knows no impulsiveness.

“Okay. Do you think my cousin will like it?”

Nino’s jaw dropped upon hearing the word ‘cousin’. The annoyance he had felt yesterday with Ohno was now doubled with disappointment; this time with Sho. “Eh? I thought..”

“What? It’s not your birthday or something right?” The rapper looked at him, dubious.

“Ah.” How was he supposed to tell the older guy that it is his birthday on the 17th without making it look like he was one-hell-of-a-cheapskate?

This is so unfair. He thought.

“Ne~ ne~Nino’s birthday, when was it again?” Aiba was doing something unusual that the guys can’t help but observe.

“What are you doing?” asked Jun who was the nearest to him.

“I’m planning to give our brat a hand-made card. TAADAA!” The miracle boy raved about his odd display of drawing skills.

“Eh? I thought you only do that during New Year’s? Plus, I think, Nino’ll just rip-”

Aiba glared at Jun who just shrugged it off. “Mean!” he said pouting, while looking helplessly at Sho who glanced warningly at their youngest member. That had completely silenced Jun. “So, when’s Nino’s birthday?” Aiba asked out of the blue, surprising the guys.

“Eh???” Sho his eyes widened in disbelief, cursing the guy silently for the moment he heard that question, he was all too shocked that his coffee spilled all over his shirt.

Jun burst out laughing at Aiba’s naiveté. Crossing his legs and his arms over his chest, “You sure you want to give him that card?” He was about to say something more when his eyes caught Ohno’s wary eyes then shifted towards the guy who had just entered the room.

“Are you talking about my birthday?” Nino’s eyes lit a fire.

“Yes, when is it again Nino?” Aiba asked absentmindedly earning himself a death sentence from the other three members.

It was the third strike. Nino wondered just what the hell was happening. They had been together for almost 12 years now, and there’s never been a time when they forget each others’ birthdays, well, except this year.

I’m never going to give that energy ball any gifts this year!

With the last few strands of hope left, shoulders dropped and face unreadable, Nino walked along the corridor, just outside the designated greenroom.

“Nino, do you have any plans later tonight?” Jun asked smiling, catching up with his pace.

“Not really.. why?” He asked, his hopes getting on the scale, only to be dropped low way too soon.

“My nieces are coming over, and I’m not really good with kids.”

“Find Sakurai! He’s the one who’s good with kids, not me!” Nino snapped, leaving a very stunned Jun behind. Expect Jun to be nice when he needs something and not because he remembered that it is his friend’s birthday today. The harsh reality hits Nino hard.

“Oh, okay?” Jun didn’t know how to react on that one. In the end, he just laughed it off, because Nino had been sulking for days now, though, the brat himself probably didn’t notice it at all. He entered the greenroom taking one last glimpse at Nino.

Nino paced back and forth outside the greenroom, deliberating. The annoyance he felt with Ohno, doubled the annoyance to the disappointment he had with Sho, topped by the frustration with Aiba, was now joined in by his anger with Jun.

Oh well, lesson learned Ninomiya, enough with expecting your so-called friends to remember your birthday! Nino threw a fist in the air before reaching the door handle. He was about to open the door when he heard a throaty voice shouted out of nowhere. It sounded familiar.

“Otanjoubi omedetou!!”

“See?” He smiled bitterly. “Even the ghost remembers my birthday! How come the rest of them did not?~!” He didn’t really bother if he had just voiced out all his thoughts. He just needed to release it.

“Happy Birthday!”

It was a low, deep voice this time.

Another ghost? Nino clicked his tongue before he decided to enter their greenroom. Though when he opened the door; he was blinded by the lights, not to mention, the peculiar yellow lights that was hung everywhere. Seconds later, popping sounds were heard. Pieces of small metallic-yellow strips fell from every direction the moment Nino entered the greenroom, combined with “Omedetou’s” and “Happy birthday’s” coming from the four guys who had deliberately ignored all of Nino’s musings for the past days.

“Oi! What was that for?!” Nino asked demandingly. “And all the while I thought you had forgotten that it is my birthday!.” He looked at Ohno, “Even you Oh-chan!”

“Eh?” Ohno’s eyes were filled with nothing but of confusion. “I thought it was your sis’ birthday today?”

Uso!
