That's... strange. I've only ever heard of people chained to each other, not to... something inanimate.

Wellll, technically, the TARDIS isn't an inanimate object. Not completely. It's sort of alive... sort of. She's a semi-sentient being. Anyone who's traveled in the TARDIS shares a bit of telepathic link with it. Gets in your head, translates any language you cannot understand. Also will speak to you telepathically, if you're special, I suppose would be the term.
