It had taken him a while to fall asleep, spending quite a bit of the time alternating between looking at the ceiling and in the vague direction of where Niou would be. But he'd eventually drifted off and after some strange dream, woke up at - according to his watch - at the usual time of 5AM. Sanada sat up and stretched, glancing at Niou who seemed to still be sleeping. Lazy ass. After a few minutes of just sitting there, slowly waking up, he yawned and stood up - with an accompanying knee crack - to head off to the bathroom.
Hidden by the arm flung over his face, Niou's lips curled into a naughty grin. He'd been awake for a while, buzzing with nerves and a bit of...lust. Perhaps some of Sanada's testosterone had diffused into him. He lay silently, but his mind was churning with half-formed lewd thoughts and his dick lay semi-hard against his thigh. Niou waited until Sanada had entered the toilet before sneaking into the store room and perching on the stool.
Sanada felt as though someone was watching him as he tugged down his underwear. It was ridiculous though... he was alone in the bathroom, the door was closed and Niou had been asleep. He stared at the wall until he finished, randomly thinking about how the morning routine was admittedly a lot easier without the piercing. He could actually stand up. Sanada pulled his boxer-briefs up, flushed the toilet, washed his hands and went back out to the bedroom. He was about to get the towel and his clothes when he spotted the empty bed and he paused. ... That was strange. "Niou?" He tried to keep his voice down so not to wake the other people in the house. Maybe he'd gone to another bathroom or something.
Niou didn't quite make it to the bedroom in time, choosing to just duck into the kitchen. The glass made a loud sound as he retrieved it from the cupboard...at least that was evidence that Niou was far, far away and not lurking around like a voyeur. After a sufficient amount of time spent sipping his water - Niou idly longed for rum - and gazing at the half moon like a contemplative old man, he began to creep back upstairs, noticing a light in the bathroom again. Was Sanada showering?
After a few moments of listening for sounds around the house to give him some sort of clue as to where Niou had vanished off to, Sanada returned to the bathroom, now with a towel. Sanada once again went through the fast showering routine. ...71, 72, 73... seconds. It was a few moments after that he shut off the water and dried himself off. Only then did he realize... Shit. Sanada sighed and hesitated before wrapping his towel around his waist. There was a vague idea of putting the clothing he'd slept in back on but... he reasoned that it was only a short dash to Niou's room and no one else should be awake. Hopefully. He poked his head out the door, looked around and made his way out before promptly bumping into Niou's sister. ... ... This was not his day.
Sanada's hands moved so fast Niou doubted he could have been much cleaner. From what he had seen, Niou could name several places that hadn't been properly scrubbed. Before he could stop himself, the thought crossed his mind that he should show Sanada how to enjoy a long, steamy shower. His eyes widened as Sanada looked around and apparently decided to...make a topless towel dash. Niou was about to run to his room, but then there was a delighted exclamation in the hallway and Niou felt a twinge of sympathy for Sanada. ''Morning.'' he said, walking out to reveal himself, completing a rather odd scene.
He only just noticed Niou appearing in the hallway and took a moment to tell himself that he didn't want to know what Niou had been doing in the storeroom. Sanada was not going to ask. He grunted in greeting to Niou, trying to pretend that he wasn't standing in the middle of the hallway in nothing but a towel. It wasn't at all effective. He decided that it was a Niou family thing to just appear out of nowhere at the most inconvenient times, something that he was not at all appreciating. Suddenly Niou's sister was way too close and speaking and Sanada stiffened, glancing at Niou. No he did not want to go to her room while wearing just a towel! Do not want! "I'm fine." he forced out, reminding himself to stay polite.
Um. Niou glanced at his sister, sharing a few telepathic looks. Yeah, that towel really is short, Niou sent back with a nod of agreement. He was about to joke and say that they could all strip to towels if it helped, when his sister quite spontaneously grabbed Sanada by the hips, spinning him around to see if he looked good from the back and oops. Niou cleared his throat as the towel fluttered away like in slow motion. That settled it, Sanada was never going to visit him again.
Well... the entire situation had just managed to go from extremely awkward to almost unbearable. Sanada forced himself to take a few deep breaths and he sighed, telling himself that it was just like being in the club house in Rikkai... only there was a female present and it was 5 in the morning and they were out in the hallway of Niou's house. Good grief. Sanada decided that the best course of action at this point would be to preserve the remaining shreds of his dignity and leave the scene. And act like he wasn't completely nude. Sanada picked up the towel, squared his shoulders and walked briskly to Niou's room, closing the door behind him. ... He was going to put on clothes immediately.
That had gone a lot better than Niou had expected. He watched with a bit of admiration as Sanada marched back to his room nude and wet. When the door banged shut, Niou and his sister let out whistles in unison. ''Seeyou.'' Niou said, staring at the door and his sister waved, disappearing into her own room. ''Hey, meet me downstairs and I'll go for a run with you.'' Niou knocked on the door, deciding Sanada probably needed time for himself.
It took him the time to put on all his clothes and run his fingers through his hair to regain some sense of calm. Sanada had made some sort of noise of affirmation when Niou had spoken through the door and after a few more minutes of deep breathing and trying to forget what had just happened, Sanada made his way downstairs. "You never answered my question from last night." he said after locating Niou. The question about how Niou had known whereabouts he'd washed. Somehow the conversation had deviated from that with the whole... sitting on Niou situation. "And I can't go running in this." For one, his shoes weren't running shoes.
Oh, good point. Niou looked at the nice dress shoes Sanada had worn over and his chest warmed at the thought of Sanada putting thought as he chose his clothes to come for dinner. ''Let's walk, then. We can walk by the canal to the park,'' he suggested. It was a place Niou used to frequent, although it got scary at times when he was alone and the streetlights weren't on. He nibbled on his bottom lip, deciding that he should just tell the truth. ''I spied on you.'' he confessed, slipping on flip-flops and opening the door quietly.
Sanada nodded at the suggestion. That seemed like a good idea. He followed Niou to the door and put on his shoes, pausing as Niou finally answered his question. ... Oh. Part of him was slightly curious as to how the spying had been managed, and then he decided that he really just did not want to know. And then he wondered exactly how much Niou had seen of him in the bathroom. "Alright." What else could he say? He wasn't going to ask Niou questions about it.
Niou raised his eyebrows at how quickly Sanada seemed to accept that his privacy had been invaded. It was something Niou both appreciated and couldn't understand. It was so lovely how easily Sanada took in his own stride Niou's eccentric habits or ideas. But Niou sometimes wondered why Sanada didn't seem curious at all. He locked the door and they set off, walking close to each other. It was summer but cool in the early morning and he couldn't resist a tiny skip into the quiet street. ''Hey Sanada, sing me a song.'' he pleaded, fingers tangling impulsively with Sanada's.
He was really happy to hold hands with Niou. The request that came along with the hand holding however... Sanada wasn't very happy doing. Sing Niou a song. In the middle of the street? Niou's tone of voice and the squeezing of the hand holding onto his didn't help. "... If you want to go do karaoke, we can." Since that would be the only time that Sanada would half consent to singing in front of another person. His fingers tightened on Niou's hand and Sanada glanced at him. "...Why do you want me to sing?"
Shrug. Niou didn't know, it was just a fancy. Like an insatiable need to listen to stories or to do lunges during class. ''I just have to. A slow song, please.'' Niou urged, bouncing a bit as he slid his fingers along the railing of the canal. There were lights flickering over the dark still water, like fireflies. Niou whistled as he strolled past, looking expectantly at Sanada.
A slow song. Sanada frowned and thought for a moment. A few moments later, feeling utterly ridiculous, he mumbled a few notes of a song before cutting off, looking in the opposite direction. He coughed. That was embarrassing. Part of him couldn't believe what he'd just done but then the part of him holding Niou's hand and noticing the expectant look he had been given understood exactly why. Thankfully they hadn't been around anyone... Sanada checked behind them quickly just to make sure. Phew. "... Are you going to sing as well?"
No, he wasn't. Niou didn't like the way his voice sounded, not like Sanada's which was low and buttery, or Marui's, which was smooth and musical. He shook his head and his hand out of Sanada's, running for the small park at the playground. Leaving Sanada the normal swing, he clambered onto the tyre swing, leaning backward to look at the sky so that his rat tail swept across the ground. Ooh. The blood rushed to his head as Sanada walked over, wearing that what-you-doing look. ''Want me to push you?'' he yelled, feeling light and buoyant.
That was not fair. Sanada followed Niou - walking, not running - to the park, stopping for a moment as he saw Niou head straight for the swings. ... Great. Sitting on the swings was certainly not what he had been expecting when Niou had suggested going to the park. Then again, Niou tended to do many things that surprised him. He frowned at the question as he finally reached the swing set. "No." Sanada sat down on the empty swing and turned to look at Niou. He pretended like the swing was just a chair. "Do you normally get up this early?"
''No!'' Niou shouted. It was hard to talk quietly when you were hanging in the air with that swooping feeling in your stomach. ''Whee!'' he said and immediately clamped his hand over his mouth like he had just uttered a profanity. That was embarrassing. He tumbled off and sat on the ground, looking at Sanada dizzily, who was so still with his feeted planted firmly on the ground. ''We can walk now if you want.'' Niou slowly said, running a hand through his hair.
Well... that was an answer. A very loud one at that. Sanada watched silently as Niou swung back and forth, his eyebrows raising at the cut off 'whee'. Um. Okay. He looked away for a moment and suddenly Niou was sitting somewhat dazedly on the ground. How had that happened? Very quickly, was the first very obvious thought that popped into his mind. He ignored the statement and frowned at Niou. "Are you alright?" Sanada stood up and crouched down next to Niou.
Niou seemed to ignore Sanada's question, choosing to rock back and forth on his heels. ''You know,'' he said pensively, nibbling on his lower lip. ''When I told you I was sad when we were together, I mean...I don't think it was because of that. You made me unexplainably happy.'' Niou scratched his knees, scanning the dark, silent park. He could hear Sanada still breathing quietly in his ear and Niou tilted his head to study him too.
Sanada frowned as Niou started talking, not really sure that he wanted to be having a conversation about their relationship at the moment. Not when things were going quite well... after the rather disastrous trip to the zoo. But Niou's comment didn't seem to be too negative and he nodded, trying to gather his thoughts together to reply. "... You made me happy too." he said quietly, feeling somewhat awkward. "But..." he looked away, looking at Niou's shoulder. "I might have contributed." He didn't know.
Niou shrugged wordlessly. Then, convinced that they were the only ones in the vicinity, he shuffled a bit and lay down, resting his head in Sanada's lap. From that angle he could see a bit of the city lights. ''I don't know if things will be any different. We might just get back together, break up, and then make up again. I don't think you want a relationship like that.'' Niou murmured, snuffling his nose against Sanada's stomach area. And in a strange way, just talking about it magnified the feelings of longing in his chest. Niou curled his legs up and inhaled deeply.
He felt strange, sitting in the middle of a park with Niou using his lap as a pillow, at some time early in the morning. But it was nice, and somewhat private. Sanada was silent, his stomach muscles clenching as Niou's nose moved around the area. Just a bit awkward. He ran one hand through Niou's hair, shifting slightly to get more comfortable. "... Can we try?" He tried not to feel too hopeful, tried not to sound too hopeful either, all to aware that Niou could very easily say so. Still... he couldn't help it. "If it doesn't work out, we can... do something." he wasn't sure what, but that didn't matter.
Niou's eyes widened, and he looked up at Sanada with his mouth slightly parted. Yes, they could do something. He shook his head in disbelief. ''...Okay.'' Sitting up now, Niou pushed Sanada's arm away so he could attach himself to the boy's side and something inside him purred its consent. He pressed his neck against Sanada's shoulder hard, as if that could help release the rush of emotion swelling inside him. ''But you have to take your cap back when I return it.'' he mumbled next to Sanada's ear. ''I like it when you wear it.''
Wait, what? Sanada could feel his heart thumping in his chest, and he stared at Niou in shock. Part of him couldn't help but feel like it was a dream, and he was going to wake up and find himself lying on Niou's futon, having probably overslept. But suddenly Niou was right next to him and mumbling into his ear and his hand seemed to shake a bit as he pulled Niou closer. He felt a bit like he had when he'd been rather out of it from painkillers, his mouth curving up in the Sanada-equivalent of a very wide, silly grin. "Alright." He could take his cap back. "... Do I have to take the barbell back?"
They were right next to each other but it still felt inadequate. Niou climbed mindlessly into Sanada's lap, kicking off his flip flops. ''Are you already thinking about getting another piercing?'' he asked. Niou glowed with glee at the smile on Sanada's normally stoic face and would tease him if he hadn't been wearing one to mirror it. He clamped his arms around Sanada's back like an overgrown koala, feeling embarrassed at being so clingy but he really couldn't help it.
It felt a bit weird sitting in the middle of the park like this, but he didn't want to move Niou. "Maybe." he mumbled. Sanada didn't really know. On one hand, not having it made life a lot easier, but... well, he would admit he had gotten to like it. He snuck one hand under Niou's shirt and pressed it against his lower back. "I might... wait a bit." he said eventually, rubbing slow circles over Niou's back. "It's more convenient."
Niou snuggled closer, his eyes half-closed. ''Yeah.'' he mused, letting out a small satisfied sigh as Sanada began to stroke his back. He allowed himself bursts of happiness, afraid that if he let it sink in he might go raving mad and try to eat Sanada up. Oh, Sanada. ''I like you just as much without the piercing.'' Then, a bit huskily, Niou's arms clung to Sanada and he whispered, ''I love you. You know that too, right?''
He sort of wished they could just magically transport to his house or Niou's house, or just somewhere out of the watching eyes of any early rising passerbyer. He nodded as Niou spoke. It was good to know that Niou liked him without the piercing just the same. He didn't say anything though, concentrating on moving his hand and just how close Niou was. It was nice. Even nicer was what Niou said next, too quietly so Sanada had to lean forward slightly to hear it properly. "Yes. I know." He frowned a bit. "... Will you believe me if I tell you the same thing?"
''I would like to.'' Niou replied, a sappy grin taking over his face. But he could sense Sanada's growing unease and with a huff of reluctance pried himself away from Sanada's warm body. He knelt there, still staring longingly at the other boy. ''Can I spend the rest of the day with you?'' Niou had no idea what he would even do if he was stuck at home away from Sanada. The thought alone gave him a stomachache in his chest. Right then he needed to be near Sanada. Touch was very important.
"... I love you too." he mumbled quietly, feeling quite embarrassed. Still, he wasn't very happy when Niou moved off his lap and moved his hand from under Niou's shirt. Sanada blinked at the question and nodded. "I have to go home and change, but yes." Were they going to have a kendo lesson or was Niou happy just... doing something else? He took a hold of Niou's hand, and squeezed it lightly. "Do you want to go?" Or was Niou strangely content sitting on the ground of the park?
Ah. Niou held a hand to his mouth, masking the wide I've-just-metaphorically-wet-my-pants grin. ''We can go out for breakfast. I'll call my sister and ask her to pass the message on to my mum.'' Niou stood up, dusting off the seat of his pants. Then...kendo...shopping...whatever Sanada wanted to do. His hand was wonderfully enveloped by Sanada's big paw and Niou squeezed back. ''Let's go eat pancakes and bacon and watch the sunrise.'' Sappy enough? He couldn't imagine doing anything else.
Sanada stood up as well, nodding at Niou's words. Yes, alright. Breakfast seemed like a good idea. His insides seemed to be doing some crazy happy dance, and he gripped Niou's hand more, just in case his was still shaking. Niou's suggestion for what to eat for breakfast made him stop for a moment but he agreed, starting to walk out of the park. The bacon part sounded good. He squeezed Niou's hand again. Despite some parts of going to Niou's house being utterly horrifying - he tried really hard not to think of the towel incident just a little while ago - it had ended up being excellent. Sanada was very happy right now.
