Y helo thaaaaar, middle of December! Where the hell did you come from? I swear just yesterday the month was starting, but now I've got an honest-to-Pete twelve days 'til Christmas and very little to show for it. Anxious much?
Not that it hasn't been a busy two weeks, what with work busy trying to make up for our mandated week off and random personal upheavals. The big one was that the screen on my old phone died, so now I have a new phone. It is smart, so it gets a name (Troy). As per usual, I lost all my old contacts and messages, but I gained a mobile hotspot. I guess that's a fair trade-off.
Music-wise, November turned out to be a pretty excellent month, even with the crush of NaNo on my head. For one, the
Greatest Video Game music compilation came out for cheap. It's *still* cheap at $5.00, but they started out selling it for $2.99. It is well worth picking up at any price; while the title is blatantly wrong (I could argue my reasons why, but every gamer has them, so let's not), the music is well done and well-produced, and hey, it's cheap!
I also discovered
Music Bridge, which allows me to sync my iTunes playlists to WMP, and thus keep updated my playlist for the TV. Which yes, I'm still not over. So it goes.
And lastly, there's the music for November, which is the most jumbled mix of old and new I think I've put up since the start. To wit:
5.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Theme of Nemesis - the sound of impending DOOOM
I heard this at the beginning of the month and immediately messaged Pea, "This will be on Novemeber's music list." Capcom's remixes for this game series have been hit or miss in places, but this one turned out pretty much perfect.
4.
Rihanna - We Found Love - It's the way I'm feeling I just can't deny...but I have to let it go
You're all so surprised, I can tell: Ten, lovin' on a current Rihanna song? NO WAI. Actually, this one had to grow on me; the first time I heard it, I was all, "Pure club music! PASS." But the more I heard it, the more it grew on me. Possibly like a fungus.
4b.
David Guetta ft. Usher - Without You - I lost my heart, I lost my mind...without you
kasuchi actually introduced me to this song back in September, but it wasn't until it got paired with the above Rihanna song that it took deeper root. They tended to show up together on the radio countdown I listen to in the afternoons, so they have been paired in my head, too.
3.
U2 vs. Lyrics Born - Callin' on Sunday - My life's a combination of my past achievements, with a lotta heavy lifting, lotta deep breathing, A lotta courage, lotta doubts a lotta mixed feelings, A lotta love a lotta luggage for a lotta reasons (this is an actual MP3 link)
And now we get to the oldies. I got this mash-up from Audiography's mash-up week, and it's one of those songs that makes me smile and tear up at the same time, even if I can never get the fast section lyrics right. I've also started following Lyrics Born on Twitter, and he manages to be both silly and inspirational all at the same time. Plus, he introduced me
Off the Waffle, which at some point I will return to Eugene just to eat at. Anyway, the song is uplifting, the mash-up gives it an even better beat than it had, and Lyrics can freakin' spit. You can check out the
original version, too, if you're curious (it is much more on the funky side of things).
2.
Bat for Lashes - Trophy - I just want my trophy back it's not for sale
I've had this song floating around on my hard drive for a couple of years now, courtesy of
himawari, but it didn't take hold and stick until this month, when it became just the right mood music for NaNo. Sometimes it really is all right place, right time for music. It is a fantastic track, too, especially if you're fond of awesome female vocals.
1.
Omar LinX - Jackie Boy - Got holes in my heart like the holes in my liver
There I was, trying on shirts in Fashion Bug, trying to find something long-sleeved and warm to wear in my frigid office, when this song came on. The store's going out of business, so the music had been provided by an employee, and it had so far been an excellent mix of dubstep and drum and bass. But that line I quoted above played, and this song started the process of burrowing its way into my skull. I e-mailed the guy for music (he has yet to e-mail me back), but I remembered enough of this song to look it up and get it for myself. (Free download from the artist, so I got the whole album. It's worth a listen.) And I've listened to it obsessively ever since. I'm not even a depressed drinker, but there's something in it that just...resonates. Plus I like how it's put together musically; the contrast in vocals, the background groove, it's all just really well finished, like a smooth sipping tequila. And just as delicious (to me).
And that is my last music post of the year! Unless I do some sort of Top Ten. Which I am kinda tempted by. But we shall see; I still have all that X-Mas stuff and travel to take care of. Which, given how this month is speeding by, I'd better get me ass workin' on.
