In-Character Information

Name: The (Tenth) Doctor

Series: Doctor Who

Canon-Point: post-The End of Time Part II

History: Follow the cut to the TARDIS files!

Personality: The Doctor is an enigma of sorts. He’s lived through numerous lives spanning over thousands of years; at this point, to say he has a good amount of experience is the biggest understatement of the century. He has a massive amount of knowledge, and is inhumanly intelligent. He is a professional at quick thinking, considering the dangers he’s had to find clever ways to evade, and is very adaptable to even the most bizarre of situations. The Doctor thinks he knows everything (and often seems to) and has seen everything. So, if something is just a touch out of the ordinary, something is different, you can bet he is going to investigate it. He’s curious and driven by intrigue-- so much so that he sometimes puts himself at risk just to check that interesting thing out (because, more often than not, that “interesting thing” turns out to be some sort of angry beast, vengeance-seeking alien fleet, bloodthirsty creature, etc.).

With all that experience he’s had, the Doctor has also experienced a great amount of loss. He holds an unfathomable amount of grief and guilt for those he could not save and those he had to destroy. He has destroyed worlds and wiped out entire species. His power is well-known through the galaxies, and danger seems to follow him wherever he goes. There is a part of him that is darker, containing all that grief and rage. The last of his kind and a constant traveler, the Doctor also tends to get very lonely at times, and craves camaraderie. Without a companion, he seems to lose sense of his morals, and can become ruthless when angry.

Despite this, the Doctor’s disposition seems to betray his “Oncoming Storm”, “Destroyer of Worlds” reputation. He is consistently upbeat and lively in conversation and mannerisms, and seems to very much enjoy talking, judging by the way he can rattle on ceaselessly about whatever intrigues him. He is prone to drag on about subjects, often launching into outrageous technobabble in the middle of an average conversation. He tends to go off on tangents, interrupt himself, and place nonsensical, silly terms to describe certain things (i.e.: “wibbly-wobbly ball of timey-wimey stuff”, “it goes ding when there’s stuff”). Generally, he’s charismatic and full of enthusiasm, hiding that darker side of himself. A large part of him is also compassionate, and he can form strong bonds with people relatively quickly. He cares deeply for people, and will try to forge friendships with anyone that seems open enough. Often, what prompts that powerful rage in him are the times when the ones he cares for are in danger, or when innocents have been harmed.

On another note, considering all those species he’s destroyed, the Doctor believes in second chances. No matter how horrendous the crime, the criminal will always be given another chance-- but that chance only. The Doctor is a protector, fighting for justice across the galaxies.

Powers: The Doctor is a Time Lord, a race known for development of time-related technologies. While the Doctor was previously able to travel back and forth through time and space, his means of doing so-- the TARDIS-- has been taken from him upon arrival in Unova. However, he’ll still keep his sonic screwdriver, a multipurpose device, albeit a now limited version. The sonic screwdriver will now be little more than a lockpick and remote control (he’ll be able to open locked doors and alter his Xtransceiver’s settings with it, for example, but nothing so extravagant as otherwise seen in the series).

Time Lords are otherwise known for their mental powers, some of which the Doctor will retain. He is able to establish links between minds, able to read thoughts and search memories, as well as provide his own. This link transcends language barriers, so he will be able to use it to communicate with his Pokemon. In the same vein, he is able to delete select memories. These are limited in that the Doctor can only establish links in person, and only when within close proximity to his subject (whenever he uses it in canon, he usually starts the process by putting his forehead against another’s). Either way, the Doctor will only use his mental abilities if he believes them to be absolutely necessary.

... Oh, also, the pockets of his coat are apparently bigger on the inside, much like his TARDIS. But that's not so different from any other Pokemon protagonist, right?

Starter Pokemon: Elgyem

Writing Samples

First-Person Sample: [Good evening, Unova! Care to take a gander at the network today, and you’ll find a somewhat raggedy-looking man tapping at the screen. Floating just behind his shoulder is a pair of glowing green eyes-- an Elgyem.]

Is this working...? Light? [The Elgyem blinks, and makes a few affirmative high-pitched sounds. The man arches his eyebrows and grins, looking fascinated.] Ah, yes, the light! Now, that’s rather simple, isn’t it? Anyways--

Hullo! I’m the Doctor. Now, can anyone tell me where exactly I am? I just turned up here-- but just me, not anything else. Don’t see how I could just turn up like that, but here I am! And “here” is certainly nowhere I’ve been before... Which is funny, seeing as I’ve been pretty much everywhere-- And there doesn’t seem to be any way out, does there? A bit troubling, that-- Speaking of which, has anyone seen my TARDIS? It’s a big blue box. [He seems to attempt to mime this “big blue box” by shaping it vaguely with his hands before he abruptly changes subject, peering over his shoulder at the Elgyem. It shies away from him, floating out of the screen’s view.]

Normally, I would just ask the locals-- but it seems this one doesn’t talk much. Just makes this sort of... blinking with her hands. Interesting sort of communication, but I can’t say it’s easy to get specifics from...

[Suddenly, he looks elsewhere, and seems very amused.] Aah, teleport pads?! Ohh, now that’s brilliant. Wristwatch communicators, these capsules that are bigger on the inside, and teleport pads! Oh, now this place is interesting!

... Hold on. This isn’t Earth, is it? ... Nah, can’t be. Ah, you humans just end up everywhere, don’t you? Clever things, you all. Now, I assume you can answer my questions, yes? I think they’re simple enough!

Third-Person Sample: The Doctor awoke in a haze-- a haze that took a while to dissipate. But that was alright with him; a haze was better than oblivion, after all. It was true, he discovered. He was still him. Had he not regenerated? Of course, such a thing should have been impossible... But he could investigate that later-- there were more urgent things to investigate, after all! Transported to a new planet-- relatively harmless-looking (nothing had killed him yet, after all), but foreign. Besides, he wasn’t about to complain about maintaining his identity beyond the odds.

Upon reflex, once he could stand properly, he slipped a hand into his coat pocket (The same coat, he noticed fondly. He loved that coat.). But, instead of touching the familiar ridges of the sonic screwdriver, his fingers grazed something foreign and smooth. He withdrew it gingerly, and held it up to his eye level for examination.

It seemed to be some sort of capsule... Spherical, red and white in color. And oddly familiar... It looked an awful lot like something out of those Pokemon games that were popular in the Earth’s nineties. He rather enjoyed those games. He turned the ball over in his hand, and tossed it into the air. Lightweight. As he caught it again, a flicker of light drew his eye-- a flicker of light that then seemed to suddenly brighten, flooding out of the crevice. The Doctor raised an eyebrow.

“What?” And then, it snapped open. “... What?!”

The light poured out of the capsule and settled somewhere at the Doctor’s feet, shifting and slowly forming a bizarre shape. He glanced at the now empty Pokeball in his hand, then back to the shifting light, and crouched before it, waiting for it to finish forming. He half expected something like a Pikachu or a Charizard to appear-- one of those he’d recognize-- but what appeared was something different. It was small-- not much taller than a foot-- and curled up as it adjusted to the sudden change in atmosphere. It was gray, humanoid, with bright green eyes. It certainly didn’t look like any Pokemon the Doctor had ever seen. And he remembered quite a few Pokemon; he was (of course) a natural at the game, after all.

It blinked and looked blearily up at him, and he answered with a grin. “Hullo there,” he greeted gently. The creature tilted its head, then raised a hand. Three multi-colored digits flashed at him in a sequence. He couldn’t tell what that specifically meant, but he attempted to mimic it in his own way, raising his own hand in response. “I’m the Doctor.”

“Elgyem,” the creature murmured, as if in reply.

“Elgyem...” the Doctor repeated, carefully sounding out the word. “Is that your name?”

The Elgyem held up its hand again, emitting another series of flashing lights from its palm. Then, it nodded. The Doctor’s eyebrows shot up in fascination.

“So you can understand me. Oh, that’s brilliant-- Can you speak? Not that the lights aren’t enough, but--”

“Elgyem,” the creature said again, floating out of the Doctor’s reach when he leaned a bit too close. It hovered out of proximity, babbling shyly in response to the Doctor’s apparent intrigue. “El-- Elyem, yem!”

The Doctor’s intrigue only seemed to spike. “Oh, look at you! You can levitate! Now that’s interesting!” The Elgyem’s neon eyes blinked and averted, still in that timid manner. Getting the hint, the Doctor kept his distance, hands in his pockets and an amicable grin on his face.

“But now what exactly were you doing in my pocket? Not quite a suitable place for a creature such as yourself, you know. It may be bigger on the inside, but you look like should be floating around the skies, eh? Not sitting around in a madman’s pockets! Did someone put you in there...? Now what sort of thing would do that? Though, the question could just as well be what sort of thing would scoop someone up and just plop ‘em off on some random planet-- especially right when they were... doing that...”

The Elgyem could hardly keep up with the man’s speech, and only stared patiently at him as he continued rattling off. It didn’t seem like he had any intention of ever stopping.
