The air. How easily it was taken for granted, yet how quick Midna was to notice that it was the last and first thing she remembered.
Her breath being forced out of her, a shrill gasp leaving her lungs as he drove his sword into her, then the breathless darkness she had succumbed to, one she could not remember.
Then, quite suddenly, air filled her lungs again, her eyes opened and she saw it... light. Letting out a small cry, she squeezed her eyes shut again, putting her small hands over her eyelids to block it out more completely. After floating around in darkness for what seemed an eternity, the light was even more unpleasant than before.
In only that sense, however.
The light was yet another sign she was living again, as her first breath had not fully convinced her. Laying with her eyes closed for a while longer, she finally slid them open again, blinking and taking in the light. It still wasn't pleasant, but at least this time she was ready for the shock.
Sitting up, she looked around and took in her surroundings, eyes falling upon the fused shadow, which had been laying beside her. Standing, she turned to take it in her hands, running her thumbs over it then craning her neck to look around at her surroundings.
What is this? Where am I?
Still squinting slightly, she pivoted and sent herself into the air, rotating to fully take in her new surroundings. The motion was too fast, however, and sent her into a state of dizzying vertigo. After laying there for a length of time unknown to her, the sudden movement had thrown her off balance and she sunk to the floor again. The hand holding the fused shadow fell to the ground lightly, while the other slid up to rub her forehead. Slowly, she laid back, drifting into sleep once more.
After a while she awoke, blinking sleepily up at the ceiling. It was much easier now, for it appeared to be dark... The light was gone and no longer burned her.
Midna had too much on her mind to take notice of the elaborate altar that was at hand. She felt that her mind was quite detached, the present all a blur and her focus settling uncomfortably in events of the past.
From the floor, she slowly to ponder her position. Looking out of the corner of her slitted eyes, she looked down at her hands.... Imp hands. So the curse was not broken, had that meant they had failed? The state of exhaustion she was in dulled her mind, slowing her senses, but it came eventually.
"Link!" The cry echoed throughout the walls of the cathedral she found herself in. What had become of Link? Oh no... oh no... take me, but what of the Twilight Realm? What of anything?
Bolting into an upright sitting position, her eyes widened, darting around to look at the rows of wooden benches she found herself between. If Link had succeeded, she would no longer be an imp, she would no longer be cursed. Her stomach wrenched as the realization hit her, the last effort of her world, their worlds, must have failed.
She had died in vain. What had become of it? Now more than ever she needed to know where she was. Once again, she bolted to hover in the air and rotate quickly, taking in her settings. Curling her small hand into a fist, she grunted, reaching down to grab the fused shadow and fit it on her head once more before taking off, floating over the rows of benches, eyes darting around to absorb the details.
Then it hit her, causing her to stop in midair. If Link had died, wouldn't he be here, too? And what about Zelda? They both escaped when Midna had chosen to finish Ganondorf on. Perhaps it was she, and she alone, who had failed? What if the fight was still happening?
What if it was long past?
How long had it been? Midna had no way of knowing. Where would she go from here? So many questions, and such a lack of answers. One thing comforted her, however, and that was knowing that perhaps Link was still out there somewhere, still fighting, that their Realms stood a chance... That they may have survived.
As long as they survived, Midna had not died in vain.
As for this accursed imp form, perhaps it was just too late? The curse couldn't be broken before Ganondorf had fallen... Would she be trapped in this form forever? Try as she might to comfort herself with the idea of her realm being safe, Midna couldn't overcome the panic that involved her state. What if, by some cruel joke, Ganon himself had banished her here? A fate worse than death, to forever live in this form, not knowing the truth of her realms...
With so much on her plate to ponder, and what felt like ample amount of time, Midna sat on a nearby table, small legs dangling over the edge and curling her hand to place under her jaw, when something caught her eye.
Very distinct, on the back of her hand, was a small crown. Blinking, she held her hand up to get a better view. That wasn't there before...
Raising her other hand, she tried to rub it off, furiously, but the mark stayed, as vivid as ever. "Wha...?"
Looking around, she lowered her eyes back to her hand, and remembered... The Triforce Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf had bore on the back of their hands. Marks that meant they were chosen by the gods.
Was she... chosen? Was that why she was here? Thinking it over, she suddenly growled, jumping up and curling her hand into a fist, shaking slightly.
Who were these gods? They were not hers, why would they choose her? This was not her realm! Her realm needed her, and if these gods had brought her here...
She would defy them, no matter what the cost! Jumping up, she kicked at the desk, and looked around. Out, she had to get out... Then, she spotted the doors, and without thinking hurried over to them, small hands opening and flinging them open, allowing her to enter the dark street.
What had she expected? Hyrule to be on the other side? Deep down, she hoped... But that hope was lost, and in the middle of the street she sunk to the ground, kneeling and punching the pavement.
What was she going to do?
