Edwardian England, Egyptian artifacts, a plucky girl heroine who can *see* magical curses and sometimes sleeps in a stone sarcophagus?

!!! I may have to go looking for those.

I had a lot of fun reading them--especially reading the various ways Theo had to improvise to get rid of the curses, by using old books about magic and adapting spells. Those were some of my favorite bits.

If those were your favorite parts, you need to go find a copy of The House With A Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs ASAP!

Hmm--I always thought of those books as "the ones with the Edward Gorey covers," when I was younger, but never took a look because they were shelved in the mystery section and looked kind of scary. I'll have to check this one out!

The entire plot boils down to "young boy must come up with a really bizarre magical ritual." Great stuff. House is the first and in many ways the best.
