Summary: Carla is haunted by the ghosts of her past.
Carla might have left Spain behind, but she was still haunted by the ghosts of her past.
Marina would appear to her, apologising for having taken Carla’s father’s watch to fund her escape with Samuel’s brother, and for having tried to blackmail Carla’s father; although Carla didn’t believe that Marina was really there, she apologised to her too, for having turned her back on their friendship way back when, abandoning Marina for Lu because she’d felt at the time that Marina brought too much drama.
Polo appeared to her too; sometimes he would be saying something Carla couldn’t make out, sometimes apologising for the way everything had turned out between them. In this situation, too, Carla felt that she should be the one apologising to him; if she had not retracted her statement that Polo had killed Marina, allowing him to go free, would he still have been alive today? Carla could never know; for all she knew, Nano still had friends inside who could have gone after Polo, or he could have crossed swords with someone else altogether.
She’d dismissed these apparitions initially as some kind of product of her own guilt, as her past coming back for her much as she’d tried to hide from it since moving to London. Then one day it wasn’t Marina or Polo who appeared to her, but Samuel; Samuel, who as far as Carla knew was still alive, who she hadn’t even allowed herself to think about for months, ever since she acknowledged that they were never going to work as a couple.
That made no sense to her; why would Samuel appear to her in the same way as Marina and Polo? Carla wanted to dismiss it, but there was something about the way he was looking at her, as though he wanted to tell her something, but Carla had no idea what that would have been.
It couldn’t have meant anything; Carla had to put it from her mind. Then she checked her phone, saw ten missed calls from Omar, Samuel’s best friend but someone who wouldn’t usually call Carla directly, and as she listened to her voicemail, she finally understood what her vision meant.
