y Potter. At the time, there were a few people in that friendship group who were very into writing Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings slash, so that was how I first became aware that it existed. Without getting into the whole drama, by the time a year had gone by I no longer had anything to do with that friendship group, and was choosing to keep out of the fandom world in the hope of not bumping into them.I hear you. I stayed in the fandom but had a few friendship groups that ended badly. I don't regret having been in the fandom, it was a great part of my life, but I definitely realize how toxic it could be. I always did, actually, but now there are things I realize I didn't at the time, being (a) older (b) far away from certain mindsets of yore ( ... )

The best "bad" characters are complex. If the source material makes it as simple as "X is a dick" they've not done well at building a character.
