Title: You Are Sunlight, And I, Moon
Characters: Jin, Sun.
Pairing: Jin/Sun.
Rating: PG
Spoilers: only up through S4
Summary: For eponine119, who requested OTPs. Jin reflects on the difference between Sun's world and his own, and wonders whether the differences are too great for them to ever have a future together. Note: Title and cut tag are lyrics from the Miss Saigon song "Sun And Moon."

He still can’t quite believe that someone like Sun would want to be with him. Jin’s never said anything, but he remembers her, remembers seeing her several times while he was still working at the Seoul Gateway Hotel. He remembers her date, too. That guy seems much more like the kind of person Sun should be with, someone who comes from the same world that she does.

Sun says it doesn’t matter. She doesn’t care that he wasn’t born into the same kind of background as her. But Jin knows it makes a difference, sees the look on her father’s face every time he looks at his daughter’s chosen partner, knows even though no one’s told him that Mrs Paik looks down her nose at him and makes comments about how he wasn’t exactly the husband she would have chosen for Sun.

And he knows it makes a difference as he tells her his father is dead, accepts her family and friends as his own while turning his back on those who have loved him all his life, fearful of introducing her to any of them in case, confronted with his low origins, she decides she doesn’t want to be with him anymore.

Even once they’ve been on the island for a while, once they’ve got past the work Jin used to do for Sun’s father, once they’ve put the revelation of Sun’s affair behind them, Jin still worries about their future once they get rescued. He doesn’t blame Sun for her fear of him, for having turned to someone else. He understands how his behaviour could have driven her to it. But he also wonders if Sun would have been happier with someone from her own sphere.

He thinks it would be easier if they made a new life somewhere far away from Sun’s father. But he’ll go to Seoul, of course, because it’s where Sun wants to be, and wherever Sun wants to be, Jin wants to be. He’ll put his feelings to one side, as long as it makes her happy.

The first time Jin truly realises none of that matters is the day he realises that they won’t have that future together after all.
