Disappointment filled the air at the high school baseball match as the losing team left the field.
“If Shephard hadn’t missed that catch,” someone sneered, “we might have won.”
“It wasn’t all his fault,” snapped Marc Silverman. “We could all have played better. All of us. And I hope you know that,” he said to Jack, glancing towards where Christian sat. “This one wasn’t on you.”
“You go on, Marc.” Jack brushed him off. “I’ll catch you up.”
“Your friend’s right, kid,” Sawyer said as he approached Jack. “And you wait, another time you’ll make the catch, and that son of a bitch’s gonna be cheering your name.”
