Title: Escape
Characters: Kate
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoilers for What Kate Did only
Summary: Written for lostfichallenge prompt #107: pictures 2.0. Kate's thoughts when she sees the horse on the island.

The first time Kate had seen the horse, it had represented a chance to escape, not only from the Marshal and the life sentence he was doubtless leading her towards, but also from the life she was leaving behind her. She didn’t want to give Mars the satisfaction of knowing how much he’d got to her with his talk of how much he thought he knew about her. Because he could never know, never even imagine, why she’d done what she did. And as Kate looked into the eyes of the horse, she realised that the escape it offered could only ever be short term.

Kate could kill Wayne, but she couldn’t destroy the part of him that would also always be a part of her. And as she ran from Iowa, from her mother, from Tom and from the life that had been all that she had ever known, she knew that she could never really run from Wayne, because she could never escape from herself.

She was reminded of that the day she saw the horse on the island. Wayne was gone, nobody was looking for her now because the outside world believed her dead. When they’d first crashed there, that first week, Jack had said something about how they’d all died and now they all had a chance to start over. And at the time, Kate had believed it. She wouldn’t have to face justice; and even then, she’d thought that if there was ever a chance to escape the island, she’d do it. Kate Austen would be dead; she’d live out her life as someone else. But as she sat there with Sawyer, Kate understood that she was never going to be able to leave Wayne, or her past, behind, and that in a way, the situation she found herself in now was similar to that when she had first seen the horse, because what she had believed to be an escape, wasn’t after all.
