Rather than do a best-album year's end list, I actually think I'm going to do a best-song list. There have been many great albums this year, and even a couple phenomenal ones, but that list (which I may even make in the next two weeks) would criminally leave out some excellent songs that have come out on otherwise so-so whole albums.
After making a total list of individual songs, I came out with 40 tracks. I think I'm in a flavor of constancy, so I'll put up five a day for the next eight days. Or at least, I'll try to.
40. Why? -- The Vowels Pt. 2
Most of the album just had too many gol-blangin' ideas going on at once. This song is still just as scattershot, but the difference is that the weird, disparate parts actually make SENSE together here.

This guy's nuts. He spent six years working on this album, and you can tell those were an ACTIVE six years of work. This link is to my other favorite song on the album; Orphaned is still my favorite, but this one put up some tough competition.

She's still smug as ever. Only Christie Hynde could pull off this kind of rockabilly cock-thrust

37. Shearwater -- Snow Leopard
SOUL. A white boy...with some SOUL. This is some epic shit.

You want to talk punch? Invincible is the best hip-hop artist I've heard this year, and this is possibly one of the best hip-hop debut albums I've ever heard. In a word: PHAT! (that's what hip-hop people say, right?)
